Has anyone ever adequately explained what Eric July supposedly did? I normally assume there's some kernel that people engaging in gay drama use to establish a veneer of legitimacy, but the only thing that came close was the "charity issues" which the charity in question didn't give a fuck about.
Dick Masterson and Vito started trolling Eric July to promote themselves. July handled it badly and engaged with the trolling in a really self-destructive way. The charity and the other issues amounted to nothing. The issue became rather that Eric was rather thin-skinned and somewhat easy to trigger in a variety of ways. Nick got involved because Dick was involved.
Ethan Van Sciver is a different set of issues. He promoted Eric's comic, did work for Eric's comic and gave a positive review of Eric's comics. But at the peak of Dick's trolling of Eric, Ethan sensed blood in the water and decided to go after Eric.
Ethan has since produced perhaps 160+ hours of streams devoted to the menace of Eric July over the last six weeks. Ethan's complaints are insincere, but more specific:
1) Eric July somehow insulted Ethan Van Sciver's retard daughter.
2) Eric July makes bad comics. When Ethan previously made positive comments about the comic, he was actually making negative comments about the comic in a secret language that only comics pros could understand.
3) Eric July is a rich guy plotting to use his money to take over crowdfunded comics and prevent poor people from making crowdfunded comics. Comicsgate and Ethan Van Sciver in the course of the war with Eric July have become a social justice moment.
4) Eric July is a conservative culture war grifter. In spite of Ethan Van Sciver doing the same thing for years, he now says he never did it and that anyone who does culture war stuff is a bad person.
Most of the things Ethan Van Sciver accuses Eric July of are things that Ethan and Comicsgate are equally guilty of. That includes culture war grifting and producing bad comics.
I dont really like Eric July much, but I like the people who complain about him way less. If Eric July remains as thin-skinned and foolish in dealing with trolls, he will eventually get intro other trouble. But right now he is a just one culture war grifter among an ocean of them operating on youtube. The Comicsgate/Dax/Nick Rekieta alliance to destroy Eric July is currently a whole lot more entertaining in its lunacy than anything Eric July personally is doing.
