1. [Criminal/Gang Member] Jacob is in a terrorist organization by the time you meet him at the start of Mass Effect 2 and when this conversation takes place, Shepard's implicitly doesn't trust Jacob and Amanda at the start because you've fought Cerberus before in the first game because they were doing evil shit.
2. [Sidekick] he's Shepard's companion, and usually the one you leave behind because he's the blandest mofo in the roster so he's even lesser than a sidekick somehow.
3. [Stereotype/Savage] his personal quest is about how he is fatherless and has daddy issues, in his personal quest you find his dad and in the end Jacob is okay with his dad getting torn apart by crazies/hands him a gun to commit suicide.
