All discussion of the candidates, updates and results should go here

For example- here's a video of Ted Cruz vying for world domination.

Also Hilary Clinton is a crook and nobody should have sex with her.

Discuss

Yes, we all know America has the best electoral system in the world, it's why all other Western countries copied it.

They copied our idea of a written constitution and other shit like separation of powers, the idea of judicial review by an independent Supreme Court, due process, and a lot of other things we synthesized from other sources, mostly English and French.

Absolutely no other country has adopted the fucked up electoral college.

And if you're just being sarcastic forgive me because it's really hard to tell when you're so often legitimately exceptional.

(Correction: Italy has one. And a gaggle of insignificant countries. Make of that what you will.)

Well, I was genuinely wrong. They're from the Democratic Congressional Campaign and the DNC, not the Clinton Foundation.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the Foundation is funneling money to Clinton, though.

Dumbest idea ever. Hey guys, lets vote for X who will vote for Y for us! Totally not redundant and a waste of money!
The theory is that it prevents candidates from just toadying up to the major population cities.

In practice it means they just toady up to the major population states, but at least it spreads it out a little better.

Are there people who actually think the electoral college is a great idea or are they just trolling?
I can't even tell with this election.

So in theory if a Candidate secured the popular vote, and turned the entire center of the electoral map red, you can still lose the election.

America, you so crazay

Because if the USA relied on the popular vote then politicians would only pay attention to major city centers like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago which are overwhelmingly liberal and left-leaning. The electoral college system while not perfect, is designed to maintain the "voice" of less populated and less urban areas.

I'm writing in someone this election, but this does seem really unbalanced when you look at it.

Typically most elections and political "fights" are Blue urban areas vs Red rural areas with purple suburbs being the decider.

Raw population gives Dems an edge (since most of the US's population lives in the US's Cities), but counties give Reps an edge (especially in the House of Representatives).

Some states were extremely close (Ohio was like, half a percent Obama). Another thing to keep in mind is that in a lot of states, there is a whole lot of nothing for miles. Most of the deep red states are huge but not dense populations per square mile. A majority of most deep blue states (especially New England) are tiny but dense. That would explain that map best. I might try and see how density, land size, population and election results corrolate actually.

Side note: this shit needs to stop now.

I can't even tell with this election.

It's a terrible, dumb idea, and only makes sense in the original context where it was actually intended that the Electoral College members would actually vote of their own volition, separating the Presidential election from the pure popularity contest that it actually is. If that had ever actually happened, it might have been a good thing.

Instead, it's just a really inefficient, fucked up process that makes the popularity contest absurdly complicated to carry out, and then pisses off everyone and sets off riots and nearly civil wars whenever it fails to do its job of just translating a popularity contest into a Presidential election.

And whenever it does, there's serious talk about getting rid of it for about a week and then nobody gives a shit about it again for another 20 or 30 or 100 years.

And if you're just being sarcastic forgive me because it's really hard to tell when you're so often legitimately exceptional.
I think he's always exceptional. Trust me, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt sometimes too.

Any system where the president is decided by wonderful states like Florida and Ohio is so fucked
