Seeing these photos of the "scissions", I'm even more convinced that Aidean had surgery to remove a cholesteatoma, a type of cyst that forms at the edge of the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and grows to invade the middle ear and mastoid bone. They can be congenital, but more often, they occur in children who have had chronic ear infections. Basically, the pressure that builds up as a result of a poorly functioning eustachian tube causes the tympanic membrane to develop a little "pocket", which fills with dead skin and other cellular debris and is highly prone to infection. The affected ear leaks stinky, cheesy material, and because the cyst blocks the ear canal, hearing can be affected. Cholesteatomata are not cancerous, but they grow extremely quickly and can become huge. If left unaddressed, the cyst can destroy the bones of the ear and surrounding skull, causing deafness. Large ones can disrupt the facial nerves, causing a hemifacial droop. The infection can spread to the inner ear and beyond, even causing meningitis (infection of the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord) or brain abscess, which is a very rare but extremely dangerous complication.

All of this is stuff Aidean's doctor would have explained to Kim. I can absolutely see her misunderstanding or exaggerating the worst case scenario to grift on social media. I'm glad Aidean had it removed; ear infections can be painful and hearing loss in young children can affect learning and behavior. I suspect he's going to need all of the faculties he can muster as he progresses through school. I wonder how long the poor guy had malodorous ear discharge, pain, and muffled hearing before someone noticed and cared enough to suggest a visit to the doctor. It's hard not to get MATI when you look at that adorable little boy and imagine all of the suffering and horror he's witnessed in 5 short years on the planet.

I wish the disgusting slattern who calls herself his mother would stop touching the scissions with her filthy fingers. Does anyone actually think that he's been bathed since being discharged from the hospital? That ear dressing is probably mighty ripe and sweaty at this point, just perfect for rubbing against a fresh surgical site.

There's no doubt that Aidean is neglected, and you're correct about the correlation between chronic otitis media and secondhand smoke, but even kids who are cared for properly can develop chronic ear infections leading to cholesteatomata.

The cells of the normal middle ear produce fluid, which is drained through the eustachian tube into the nasopharynx and then swallowed. The size and anatomic arrangement of a young child's head and middle ear make it harder for fluid to drain through the eustachian tube. When it builds up, it can become infected. It's one of those self-perpetuating things, with every episode of otitis media making it more likely that the eustachian tube will become damaged, leading to more ear infections, and so on.

See how the infant eustachian tube is more horizontal than that of the adult? It's because kids have smaller heads, and it means that it's harder for all the fluid to drain out of the middle ear. Respiratory illnesses, allergies, and chronic exposure to environmental irritants like secondhand smoke can also cause the nasopharyngeal tissues to swell, closing off the tube and causing air and fluid to build up in the middle ear, causing infection. This is why kids are more likely to get ear infections, especially following a cold. There just isn't enough room within their heads.

Aidean has definitely had multiple ear infections and I would be surprised if he'd gotten adequate treatment and pain relief for any of them. Heartbreaking, really.

On the one hand, I know smaller shelters do not have the time or resources to deal with a lot of BS. On the other damn hand, they’re going to find out the hard way when this dog ends up back with them in a few months. Their first clue should have been that the adopters have no job whatsoever, and their second clue should have been the immediate concern in the comments. SMH

This is all kinds of 🌈 but what if Kim finding out this fetus is a boy has her resigned to accept she’ll never have a daughter? I doubt she’s capable of showing anything close to sensibility, but stranger things have happened.

This is "absolute best case scenario" territory. Expecting Kim and Dalton to voluntarily surrender an unwanted animal to the shelter where they got her is highly optimistic. The dog will be lucky to be alive six months from now.

Some of you grew up middle class and it shows. That's not at all a bad thing. ❤️ Kim will continue pumping out horrifically deformed fetuses and neglected children until she becomes infertile from a sexually transmitted infection, reaches menopause, or dies.
