Unironically, the most stable that the nation has been was when the US occupied it during the 1920s.

Haiti is a place that actually needs colonization. Its a place where they are usually trying to get one nation or another to occupy it militarily, under the guise of the UN.

Recently they were trying to get Brazil to occupy it, then other African states, etc.

I will say this though, that the US's recent occupation didn't work out because unlike in the 20s, we're not really interested in a genuine colonial approach where the US Marines (aka Butler and others) go in, make the place orderly, and then United Fruit moves in for awhile- but instead we're just there so the Clinton foundation can get rich off of skimming charity aid.

At least in the 20s we actually tried building roads, arresting gangsters and bandits, and had some order for awhile.
If you're wondering what happened to Haiti, its basically the same thing that happened to the USSR- but under a very different path.

It went from being the richest place in the New World (highest amount of cash crops) to the poorest. You had the 'revolutionaries' who took over the nation immediately descend into infighting for some 50 years afterwards, an attempt at imperial conquest of the Dominican republic, and dictatorship after dictatorship where they just continued to make the nation worse and worse, and just continued to kill off productive members of society till literally noone was left.

The USSR eventually got its shit together under Stalin, and while he had his own purge of military heads and beaurocrats, even he realized that he needed to keep many of these people around.

Haiti a) never stabalized, and b) never stopped purging productive elements of society.

We want to blame the French often for Haitis state (the indemnities), but literally its just a case of "If you want to reopen trade with France and normalize relations, youre going to have to pay us for all the French citizens you slaughtered, if not- have a nice day".

I wouldn't say thats what even caused the nations dismail state, it certainly didn't help, but one brutal dictatorship or emperor after another killing off a chunk of the productive population continuously is what really messed up the country.

Imagine if you had Idi Amin, then Idi Amin 2.0, then Idi Amin 3.0, then Idi Amin 4.0, etc endlessly for a century. It'd barely matter that Britain sanctioned their nation. Thats what Haiti essentially was during the 19th century.

I do feel sorry for them, but unironically if there is any nation that needs a colonial power to step in to put the place in order, its Haiti.

was assassinated in a professional military hit-job in his own home. The guards literally let these guys come in and kill him. It's been alleged that both he and previous acting President Claude Joseph were both in on this assassination as a way to either scheme power in the country, or more likely to prevent Moïse from carrying out his plan to disrupt the drug trade within the country which threatened a lot of powerful people in Haiti.

To tack on context:

-Essentially, the head of state (in control of Haiti, very unpopular) goes to Kenya begging the US to send police to fight back against gang violence. Court tells them to fuck off, it’s unconstitutional. Kenya agrees to help, and is financially backed by the US (of course). He then agreed to hold general elections… in 2025. This will likely not happen as he intends to maintain control.

-Gangs, led by G9 (power Haitian gang) head honcho Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, pictured below being the blackest man alive, told him to “Fuck off and step down or we’ll unite the gangs against corrupt politicians in Civil War,”.


-Gangs hear election news, head of state doesn’t step down, gangs start prison riots and free prisoners from the two biggest and baddest prisons in Haiti, and begin state of anarchy in the capital as the head of state flees.

-Also, there’s cannibal gangs eating dead victims on the street because of course there is.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken pressed Haiti’s prime minister, Ariel Henry, to announce his resignation and a political transition in a series of phone calls that took place Thursday and were described as “tense” by senior State Department officials.

I thought they were AI generated at first too. There's something off about the pictures and its really hard to place a finger on what it is. Its the weird contrasts and the "distinctness" of the subjects and the background.

The USA airlifted its embassy staff, gang violence is escalating and the Pope is calling for all sides to work toward peace and reconciliation.

Haiti: US airlifts embassy staff as gang violence escalates​

The United States has airlifted non-essential embassy personnel from Haiti, the US military said on Sunday.

It comes as violent gangs have overrun the country threatening to bring down the government.

"This airlift of personnel into and out of the embassy is consistent with our standard practice for embassy security augmentation worldwide, and no Haitians were on board the military aircraft," the US military's Southern Command said in a statement.

The embassy clarified on social media that it "remains open."

"Heightened gang violence in the neighborhood near US embassy compounds and near the airport led to the State Department's decision to arrange for the departure of additional embassy personnel," it said.

Port-au-Prince 'under siege'​

A wave of violence broke out in late February while Prime Minister Ariel Henry was visiting Kenya to push for a UN-backed deployment of a police force from the East African country to fight gangs.

Since then, the criminal gangs have taken control of much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and have attacked key infrastructure including two prisons where the majority of the 3,800 inmates were able to escape.

The AFP news agency reported that some residents had broken into public buildings to seek refuge from the violence.

More than 360,000 Haitians have been internally displaced because of the violence, the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Saturday.

"Haitians are unable to lead a decent life. They are living in fear, and every day, every hour this situation carries on, the trauma gets worse," Philippe Branchat, IOM's chief in Haiti, said in a statement.

"People living in the capital are locked in, they have nowhere to go," he said. "The capital is surrounded by armed groups and danger. It is a city under siege."

Meanwhile, the airport in Port-au-Prince remained closed and the main seaport — which serves as the primary gateway for food imports — suspended operations on Thursday after it reported looting.

"If we cannot access those containers (full of food), Haiti will go hungry soon," the NGO Mercy Corps said.

Pope offers prayers for Haiti​

On Sunday, Pope Francis offered his prayers for Haiti amid the spiraling unrest.

"I am following with concern and pain the serious crisis affecting Haiti and the violent episodes that have occurred in recent days," Francis said after his Sunday Angelus prayer.

Francis called for all sides to work towards peace and reconciliation "with the renewed support of the international community."

The Caribbean bloc CARICOM has summoned envoys from the US, France, Canada and the United Nations to discuss the violence at a meeting in Jamaica on Monday.

Guyana's President Irfaan Ali said the meeting would take up "critical issues for the stabilization of security and the provision of urgent humanitarian assistance."
