Do you really think this? I think to the extent it's true it's because "society" is controlled by people who are (broadly speaking) on your side. It isn't the right that wants to blow up gender norms.

I've met some home-schooling moms through my church, all of whom are pretty great. My internet racist friends often bemoan the toxic effects of absent fathers on families, particularly among our most vulnerable Americans in the vibrant inner city. Anyone in my social circle gets respect for earning enough money that his wife gets to stay home and raise the kids. Maybe you're just in the wrong circles. I don't read bell hooks or anything but I've heard whispers that there are a lot of toxic left-wing spaces on the Internet. Places where radical feminists treat sex relations as some weird zero-sum game. They call men "moids" and seethe all day. They laugh about men being "disposable," but never seem to mention that men have invented 99.99% of all useful things, from the wheel to the microprocessor. It's a sad state of affairs, but I think if you moved to a more trad community you might be happier.

In a word, yes. I’m still pretty sure that if I had gotten what I wanted in terms of grad school and career, it would have been difficult if not impossible to be anything close to a good parent.

The right is pretty straightforward about wanting women like me out of the workforce and back in the kitchen, but baby or not the life of a SAHM doesn’t suit me.

Anyone in my social circle gets respect for earning enough money that his wife gets to stay home and raise the kids.

To me being able to work isn’t about the money (I carried on just fine in NYC on internships and the Master’s degree.) it’s more to do with having an existence that’s distinct from my role as a wife /mom and maintains some independence. But it helps that I can secure some benefits for my family if I work.
