The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly "feeling left out" as King Charles makes a huge decision on the future of the monarchy.

While he is taking time away from public duty, King Charles's recent cancer diagnosis is said to have led to plans for the line of succession planning. A source has told Heat Magazine that Meghan and Harry are finding it "hard" to hear the monarch is making these plans without consulting them first. However, they added that the pair are "not going to kick up a fuss".

Royal author Tom Quinn has also spoken to the Mirror about the fact that the plans appear to centre about Harry's brother, the Prince of Wales.

Speaking to the publication, Mr Quinn said: "Charles is also aware that, as future King, William is at the heart of the succession planning that is taking place right now – officials had assumed Charles would remain healthy at least into his mid-eighties before succession planning would need to begin but in fact it has now begun and indicates perhaps that Charles’ cancer is more dangerous than we have been led to believe."

He also added that Harry seemingly hasn't been involved due to the lack of "trust" for him.

Mr Quinn added: "Harry is definitely not being included in succession talks because he is no longer a working or even a trusted royal - he has got his wish and is no longer the spare, or at least he is only nominally the spare.

Also M&H may have had a falling out with Elton John because he didn't invite them to his Oscars party last year.

No, wrong. Whatever is going on, it's huge and Kensington Palace doesn't know how to handle it.

Kate and her three children haven't been seen since Christmas, where she made an appearance where she looked even thinner than normal.

ALLEGEDLY sometime between Christmas and NYE an ambulance was called to their home and left with a police escort.

At some point after that and before the surgery announcement, a weird article was posted suggesting that Kate is unstable and that she and William were having major arguments. If it were *just* surgery+recovery and the palace behaved normally (a bowel resection lines up with the recovery timeframe given and Kate has long been speculated to have Crohn's or a similar condition), no one would really care.

I think I brought it up way earlier in the thread, but I always assumed on a glance that she was part native before I was more aware of all the shit surrounding the royal family. She doesn’t look black at all and never has.

People are so used to internet celebrities putting every detail of their lives into the spotlight than when a family decides to keep their privacy, they think they're dying or there are issues. Even though the Royal Family often publishes their activities, they aren't 100% authentic and they photoshop and edit their pictures to look good. A mom being sick with three kids being obviously stressed about it it's not a laughing matter. Do they expect Kate to make one of those dramatic videos sharing her "experience" to the world? Because ain't happening.

Remember that the ones going crazy about it are the same people who would say that the paparazzi killed Diana because they were obsessed with her, totally oblivious that the reason they were obsessed was because their audiences wanted more of her all the time.

There are spots where it's clear they've layered different pictures from the same shoot together to make a "perfect" version. This has apparently prompted people to dive down schizophrenic rabbitholes, where they insist that Kate is actually dead because her face looks the same from the same angle in different pictures.
