The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

Well people on TikTok and such are getting invested in the mystery of Kate Middleton right now. Currently the prevailing theory was domestic violence and other stuff so bad that if she had a side shitter she would be compelled to at least post a selfie of her upper half that hides the bag so people know it isn't as bad as they're gossiping.

They need to do something soon, otherwise the rest of her life will be followed by horrible rumors, like the singer that allegedly got some of his ribs removed so he could suck himself off.

I think Kate wore sequins because they’re typically pretty good at disguising lumps. The fabric is very thick and the sequins reflect a lot of light in asynchronous ways which disguises imperfections. Flowy dresses can be sheer or clingy because the fabric has to move—so it shows stuff. At events, you see fat women wear sequins for good reason.

You guys make it sound like she has a stoma. If true, poor Kate. If I had to wear my own poop, I would stay home and stay silent about it, too.

Whatever is going on, she looks unrecognizable in that photo with her mum. I thought it must be a different person. She must be sick as a dog (and so is Charles—he looks wretched).

Anyway, the not commenting is very British and very royal. I don’t think the rumors will stay prevalent when she returns to public life. “Never complain and never explain” continues to work very well for members of the BRF (whereas Andrew looked like a nonce after his interview and Harry is pathetic). If Catherine is sick, telling people about it (1) detracts from Charles’ illness, (2) encourages more (and more precise) speculation, (3) actively pulls focus from other working royals for personal news, (4) opens up opportunity to criticise the healthcare system, and so on.

I hope they stay silent and that she shows up healthy enough at Easter.

I can't think of one single thing I'd like Meghan to talk about or worse, I don't think there is any single topic she could talk about without sounding like a moron. What is the podcast for?
Spotify felt the same way
TOPLINE Meghan Markle struck a new podcast partnership Tuesday with Lemonada Media—the podcast company behind Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ show—after Spotify’s multi-million-dollar deal with Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, ended last year after the couple reportedly failed to meet “productivity benchmarks.”
Of Spotify’s high-profile efforts to outshine competitors, Ek added: “The truth of the matter is some of it has worked, some of it hasn’t. We’re learning from those and we are moving on, and we wish all of the ones we didn’t renew with the best of success they can have going forward.”
The Ringer founder Bill Simmons, who is the head of Spotify‘s podcast innovation and monetization, called out the couple in June.
“‘The F— Grifters.’ That’s the podcast we should have launched them,” Simmons said during an episode of his self-titled podcast. “I gotta get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try to help him with a podcast idea.”

Just wondering when she could even have had the stoma put there? What’s the recovery time for that kind of surgery? Probably a lot less than any kind of bowel resection but still in weeks? Has there been any period of absence recently or maybe she’s had this for a long time? If so, she’s done a good job of keeping it quiet.
Also just to bang on about how upper class Brits react - it’s a mindset that is very set in its ways. I am a poor plebeian but have been in situations where not royalty but the aristo level operate and they do not live like normal people. I went to uni with a few who had been shipped off to boarding school at 8 and saw mamma and pappa (if pappa wasn’t shagging the help) at term end only. They are like a different species. The rules are different. Kate cannot just set a trend for a formal occasion - she certainly can within limits for something like a very minor event but for the formal stuff, there’s symbolism and tradition and that’s that. It’s a very weird world.
When they talk about ‘bringing the kids up as normal as possible’ I think people think they mean like the working class, but what they really mean is a little bit away from some of those very strict obligations.

If it goes well, you should be in hospital for a week or so followed by several weeks recovering at home. It takes about three months to get completely back to normal (minus the bag of shit hanging off you).

Her podcast is about stereotypes but her son is named Archie and she is a fucking idiot so she named it archetypes.
It's been her plan all along. She named her son Archie, and his sole existence since birth has been as a product and a brand. Their foundation is called Archewell.

She wants him to have this massive name recognition to compete with future King George VII, because in her delusional heart she truly believes it's a popularity contest and her son can somehow be king.

I don't know who will have the biggest complex about their childhood, Archie, or his sister who gets ignored completely outside her initial naming controversy (which again was by design). Your mother created you as props and a brand, enjoy!

How about something like "there were some difficulties with the surgery but Kate is healthy and well on the path of recovery and is preparing to soon return to her more public roles" or something.

We know something bad happened, but pretending that it's perfectly routine like a dental checkup with no mention of when we will see her again is much much worse then hinting at the nature of the surgery but giving a timeline to recovery. At this point we don't even know if she's stable or dying.

His name is just Archie, right? It's not short for anything? Could you imagine having King Archie? No one would ever take him seriously.

Or something like “Kate slipped out of the palace to run down to the chemists to get something for the kids and got in a knife fight with some minorities, as one does. She won but will need to be stitched back together.”

Totally plausible and the public would be like “cherryo innit, happens all the time”.

I'm surprised she doesn't show off her kids more. I doubt Harry tries to control anything ahe does, and the kids would gain her a lot of narc fuel.

After having to walk behind his mother's coffin in front of the whole world at a very tender age, showing off the kids is probably one of his only red lines.
