It is rather nuts that Aella is probably smart. She could've been an artist, musician, psychologist, nurse but instead she uses her hopes and energies to be a famous whore.

She was raised to not value education. Her family intended for her to be a good Christian wife. It seems at the same time as teaching her that a woman's place is as wife and mother, they simultaneously gassed her head up about her intelligence. Her lack of proper schooling means she has no experience of studying or hard work, and she doesn't think she needs to try, because she identifies as clever. It would hurt her ego to not find something immediately easy, so she gives up straight away and acts as if she didn't care anyway and was just trying it for fun.

Despite hating every aspect of her upbringing, and remaining in a perpetual state of teenage rebellion against it, she leans into not having formal education as if she's proud of it. At 32, catching up now would take many years of hard work, and she thinks hard work is beneath free-spirited intellectuals like herself.

Her family really didn't give her a chance at life. If they had valued education outside of bible studies, she could have gone to college and escaped her upbringing with an actual career.

Instead she's been left without sufficient education or employable skills for anything other than entry level jobs. What did her family expect? They've raised a good-looking narcissist, and left her with no life skills. It's not hard to see why she became a whore, because she really didn't have that many options in life.

This is super common in homeschooled kids. They don't deal with any competition or comparison. One-on-one attention benefits ANY kid but then they think that their marks are entirely their accomplishment. They're not sitting in a classroom of their actual peers, seeing the Korean third-graders that can already speak four languages, play violin, and complete trigonometry crush their test scores every time. Realizing that you are not the most specialest smartest snowflake is a really critical piece of social learning and it just tends not to happen to the homeschooled early enough in life.
