I do feel bad for the guy because he does have a history of giving a whole lot of money to indie projects that never make it off the ground, while Undertale got so massively popular people sniffed him out right away and harassed him.

Furries often drive their monthly costs as close to zero as possible by renting out large houses meant for families and stuffing as many people in there as possible. Rent, utilities, internet, and other miscellaneous expenses are almost nonexistent when you have 6+ separate incomes paying into it. That leaves them with an EXTREMELY large budget that they blow on artwork and conventions.

That leaves them with an EXTREMELY large budget that they blow on artwork and conventions.

This is also consistent with the reason the furry fandom became as hyper-tolerant as it did. They tried to furrify their lives and got excluded for it. Before the internet, people who experienced this manned the fuck up and adapted to society's norms. But the internet granted a second option: form a massive furry hugbox/echo chamber and retreat into it, excluding few if any members for strange behavior because Exclusion = Bad. These furry sharehouses are thus protusions of the furry fandom's safe space into the real world.

There are quadsuits, which look more like realistic animals since the suits are made to be walked on all fours.

You rarely see them because not many people make these on commission and they are expensive.

Many of them also take up jobs related programming and computer science, which not only pays well but enables them to spend all their fucking time on the internet and in some cases work from home and even more decide not to have children, so thats an extra (10s of ) thousands of dollars free per year

Yes, 50$ would be fair price for this kind of character. Even up to 80$ would be possible, but everything beyond is ridiculous.
Furries are just an amazing species. When it comes to buying time consuming and high quality commissions from professional artists they often cry about money issues. But here, take 1240$ for a lizard with a nice set of boobs.

This picture / titty lizard reached a price the artist never expected it to reach. Until then the most paid for character by the same artist was a mouse with titties which sold for 380$ (see here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/19800326/)
380$ is already a price which leaves you baffled. But 1240$ is beyond words.

Somebody mentioned before that the second highest bid on the titty croc was 1100$. Just to make you cringe even more: The guy who bid the 1100$ is not a highly paid tech nerd, but a guy who works as a pipe liner.
