But even absolute cringe stuff like that still seems relatively harmless compared to the situation now. I don't think there's much reason to still visit 4chan if you aren't a schizo, political extremist, or tranny.

There was something substantially different in tone on those. Also /raid/ fags. Stuff like Chanology was also directed at a hyper-litigious cult with nearly infinite resources for litigation. It represented an existential threat to a forum that at the time was already struggling financially and basically held together with baling wire and bubble gum.
