Sounds interesting. I have heard a similar theory that might have been a summary of this book, that these paradigm shifts sometimes can't happen until the old guard literally dies out and no longer have the clout to protect their pet theories.

He had enough clout to squash Russian and younger linguists who were close to proving him wrong, not only that the language was richer than he imagined but that the Maya were a warrior society that committed human sacrifice.

In the case of SRS, it's seen as a moneymaker and a way to extend knowledge(?) of the human body in a way transhumanists salivate over, so that leads to a flush of cash, research, and attention. There are currently no pesky ethics getting in the way, and I'm sure the researchers involved think they are going to be at the forefront of some breakthrough on par with organ transplants. The poor people who get pig hearts have to wait until they have no other options to get approved for a crazy intervention that ultimately only extends their lives by a few months. There isn't any such gatekeeping now for transition surgery, and the patients can't complain.

I believe this is mostly because its scent (tasty-fresh or stinky decay) might attract predators. (No clue if it's of any nutritional benefit to the new mother, though it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility.)

When I gave birth the placenta "got away" and I was soooo disappointed. I had no intention of keeping it but I really wanted to see it -- it's not every day your body creates (and expels) an entire major organ. Slathering it with ink and slapping it on a sheet of paper for posterity sounds pretty cool and if I'd known about it at the time I definitely would have done it. Oh well.

this is so hard to watch. but I did watch the worst parts. the patient whose healing amhole got examined had some hank hill genes, extremely small urethra (or the surgeons did something to make the outlet smaller, idk). the examiner could barely shove one finger in there. the HSTS troon said the pain from surgery was so bad he wished for death.
