I mean I played it once lol. I just couldn't wrap my hand around the flight yoke looking controller of the 64.
I kid. The N64 stick was the first analogue controller I used and I was a teenager during that era, so that's when I had the most time to play games. It's my benchmark because of that. If I spent most of my life playing on more modern style sticks, I'd probably find the N64 one weird as well.

My first controller was the wii. And i guess technically the PC. Say what you will, the nunchuck and wiimote was intuitive for a 8 year old. Then I moved to Xbox One and got spoiled. My tolerance for control set ups is low to say the least.

Here’s the thing: People like to joke about muh three hands with the N64 controller, but 99% of games use the left or middle prong, not both (usually middle). They both use a movement option (d-pad or stick) and a left shoulder button (L or Z). Just hold it like a normal controller, with your left hand wrapped around the prong you’re using, and ignore the other one.

I just had zero practice with this monster of a controller. It is not beginner friendly. A Xbox 360 controller is stupid easy in comparison. But I guess that's what happened, it built off the N64 controller.

What's there to practice? It's just a regular controller. I don't get it, it's stupid easy too, it's even easier because it has fewer buttons actually.

There's a reason the N64's controller was the only one that ever used that scheme. It was barely a year after the 64 launched that Sony introduced what we've collectively decided over the last quarter century is the optimal way to do 3D controls.
I mean for its time it was cool. The dualshock blew it out of the water and I'm not even the biggest fan of the dualshock.

No it doesn't. It's a better layout, but N64 has a more accurate stick that allows more precise movement. The reason it never caught on as the standard is because it breaks. IIRC it's so precise it allows for something retarded like 4,000 possible different movement directions in ~30 different walking/running speeds in Mario 64.

Even the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube, could only register something like 256 directions on their sticks IIRC.

The N64 stick is basically the same mechanism as a ball computer mouse with a stick instead of a ball.

It was a very experimental time and everybody was coming up with wacky ways of dealing with a really complicated new problem.

I'm not even the biggest fan of the dualshock.
I'm not a big fan of the specific layout, but the twin-stick design was so incredibly smart even if tons of developers didn't realize it at the time. 3D games that pre-date the DualShock are just a fucking chore to play. I don't care how much nostalgia anybody has for Mario 64, the PC mod that adds analog camera control makes it so much better to play.

Who possesses the manual dexterity to take advantage of that in a useful way? I've never used a Playstation, Xbox, or Gamecube controller and said "gosh, I just wish these sticks had 20 times more precision".

The problem other than the breaking was that they stuck it in the middle of this trident shaped monster. Dualshock is pretty easy to figure out.

There is something to be said about good layout vs raw performance. The dualshock just makes more sense with 2 sticks and 2 handles
 
A good 7/10 every once in a while isn't really a bad thing imo. They usually have more personality than your average AAA 9/10.
I remember back in 2016 when one of the journos of IGN gave a respectful 7 out of 10 for Doom 2016, and people where having tism meltdowns by calling IGN out because the score should be "le higher." But that's the thing, a 7 is a good score for a product, even if anyone agrees or disagrees with the score
