Yeah being able to live like a king on the wages of a peasant is the main appeal, even with the tourist tax included.Thai can also be pretty trashy, but if you really want to commit to having a little fenced-compound/farm in the boondocks, you can do it there for pence. And also, cheap hotels and restaurants in the resort areas.
It is an interesting interpretation of familial piety, like how rapist murderers who happen to be beloved great men show up a lot in Europe in Asia they've got benevolent mother figures who did some very lolcow tier shit, Cixi would definitely have a thread.ok, I'm not saying Chinese culture is a paragon of feminism. Far from it. I just find this detail, as well as the intense respect paid to empress dowagers (i.e. the Emperor's mom) to be really interesting. Did Ci Xi ruin it for everyone else? Yes. Did she give a fuck? I'm not sure she did; she went from being a concubine of the Emperor to the Empress regent for like 40 years. Her mistakes were the Boxer Rebellion, and buying into her own hype that she could live past 100.
Murdering all your perceived rivals (anyone competent, including but not limited to romantic competitors and your own children/nephews), supporting before comically backstabbing various movements (reformists, ultranationalists, reformists again) , and in a final act of spite appointing a little baby as your heir, maybe even get a board if she did make it another decade.
The closest westernish version of her would probably be Brunhilda and her BFF Fredegund, another great pair of examples of a fully evolved and empowered historical pick-mes IMO.
