Rewatched one of his old Kickstarter Crap vids after looking up where one of the scams featured (Skarp) ended up, and it really made me wonder: Why the fuck didn't he just revert back to simple stuff like that instead of beefing with his audience and self-flagellating?

Him revisiting old kickstarters he covered was well-received, IIRC he had even managed to bounce back from the incredibly retarded video he made defending Anisa's choice to punish the world by unleashing her nude body, and he even had an olive branch extended to him by Sam after he released his cut of the documentary.

This dude got so many chances to avoid the iceberg that was in front of him and he just kept steering towards it. It's hard to muster up any sympathy for him even if you believe Anisa was what ruined him (I think he was just a fag waiting to unravel, the one-sided beef with Sam being an example of it).

He really could've had a steady stream of views by just putting out simple, silly shit like he used to do. He's an example of a youtuber who fucked himself over by making unnecessary changes to his content.

GTA V mods were super easy for any idiot to make a video on back then and he still managed to push out a couple stale videos on that. He got lucky with Content Cop because the people he made the videos on were easy targets that people already didn't like. Same with his Kickstarter Crap videos, his most popular videos in that series involve that retarded beatboxer, the literal retard who wanted $100 to make a console, and 3 (4?) guys who made cringey videos from their work office. Hindsight is everything, but it definitely shows that he was only able to make entertaining content when he was able to punch down. You've gotta remember that the vast majority of the internet doesn't even use the term "lolcow". Everyone thought the video was cringe, and very much a miss given the content cop persona he had carved for himself, but he was not as maligned as he would've become post-boxing arc.

Very much disagree on the notion that his fanbase didn't care for his non-content cop content - his last bad unboxing video sits at 4.8 mill right now. They loved that shit because it was Ian riffing off whatever bullshit his fans sent him, in some cases literal shit. Sure, Content Cop was his peak and the reason he became a phenomenon in youtube as opposed to ending up as a niche, edgy guy, but he had a steadily growing fanbase with his Kickstarter Crap and Bad Unboxing series. While I do agree with you that YouTube has fucked monetization for edgier content creators, it's more than just the content. As a former iDubbbz fan, he was one of those people I could watch regardless of what content because I enjoyed his personality and comedy. This point has been made many times before, but if Ian wants to say "I don't find this type of comedy funny, so I want to distance myself from that", and left it at that, Ian would probably get some shit but nowhere near where he's at now. Ian has shown multiple times that he's the "puppet master" that was only a ticking time bomb before I knew it was joever.

I’ve been watching what he’s been up to since the fallout last year. He fell off my radar for years after the initial Krispy Kreme stuff but being a five year loyal Anisa hater I like to keep up with those who dunk on them and then find success like Sam and Tyler. Feels me but there has been a comedic void with Sam’s silence on what Ian’s up to and what he thinks of him a year later.

I don't doubt he would've had a fall in relevancy even if he had never gotten the broom out to shoo his old fanbase away, the difference is that he would still be well-liked by the people who bothered to stick around. A small but loyal fanbase can sustain you for a long time still. Look at Sam Hyde and how he basically hid away on Gumroad for years post AS cancellation before iDubbbz. Or look at Metokur, who despite having <300k subs on Youtube, not uploading for literal years, and barely streaming anymore, still gets 10k+ viewers whenever he does decide to stream, with hundreds of fans eagerly throwing their money at him (of course, the whole cancer thing helps with that, but still).

Ultimately, without Anisa and the fan disavowal, which go hand-in-hand, his legacy would be intact, and he'd go down as a well-respected part of YouTube history. He would objectively have far more money as well, enough to step away from the public eye forever if he wanted to. Now you have people questioning if he was ever good at all or if it was a mixture of dumb luck and skinwalking more successful people.
