I tried it and played it for an hour or two, and man this is great. The HL2 Beta always felt more right, more oppressive, where in retail you didn't feel that humanity was fucked, and this mod does a fantastic job at reimagining it with a good level of polish. Too bad it kept the cut "Kleiner dies at the beginning" concept because it was always shit.

It also has a bunch of hard scripted elements that feel way too unorganic, like some Metro cop that stands around and does nothing, or a citizen that leans on a wall and has zero interactivity. There's a HL1-esque HUD with a separate flashlight (albeit infinite unlike in HL1) and it has MMod-like gunplay which is fantastic.

It's nice that they're trying to veer more towards the modern side of things rather than going balls to the wall with the 2003 beta feel and play.

I watched playthroughs, and if I am not mistaken, Barney says "Doc you poor sap. Gordon, you go on ahead. I need to find somewhere else safe for Dr. Kleiner(...)", so maybe Isaac Kleiner doesn't die, yet he's hurt instead. I'm not sure if Dark Interval will play like this, just have to see. Regardless, I have positive for both RTB:R & DI - since DI, since it's being developed by an Eastern European team so it's most likely pozz free.

And yeah, I noticed that! It has a very "modern" like feeling, almost a GMod-esque addon with the controls instead of the janky animations, and the sountrack is good, as well as the ambience feeling (always loved and valued how the soundscape adds value to a map. Too bad they didn't use the "Oxygen is being swapped by noxious gasses, so you better conserve yours!". Also no words on making the Combine managing Aperture. Could never stand GLaDOS on the retail game or the retarded "multiverse" concept.
I believe the Half-Life games take place in a "serious" universe where things are taken, well, seriously. And Portal takes place on a ""very similar"" universe, where everyone functions like a retard, a lá The Simpsons/South Park.

RTR:B's team doesn't seem like the type where it would add a tranny flag on secret, thankfully. So this is a title I'm looking forward to come out when it does. Same on DI.

I know many will think this is "obvious", yet this reeks to me of desperation of how gaming as a medium is bankrupt, and how it only serves to send a message and to... how can I say - perhaps not "launder money", but a similar word. e-sports, competitions, AAA(A) games with a message embedded, studios wasting money to make games that aren't that much interesting, independent developers trying to work (and most of the time doing their part to save the industry). It just feels like an all around rot that keeps festering. And it's not from gaming, it's from our society as well. I just added these words because I wanted to add something to the thread without being off-topic. In times like these, I am glad I can always revisit Counter-Strike, Sven-Co-op, some GoldSrc engine mods and even the classic games on emulators. There isn't much you need from "Current Year" to make yourself happy, video gaming wise.

I have to say that it is the foundations they lay upon. Video games admittedly are an investment at this point, and they are sort of like movies in terms of development. However, we now live in an age of something of extremes, where economic inflation and recession is present but comfort and luxuries are basked into after work in our high maintenance civilization. I think the word you're looking for is "re-cycling money".

The will and want to make video games was a big deal back in my day. It was the mix of cutting edge technology with artistic skill, smarts in programming, engineering, and mathematics, and creative entertainment. An ultimate melange of entertainment so to speak. All the smart and geeky people had the chance now to strike it rich and make it big or at least make something of themselves with their own creativity and scruples. You didn't need to have the right physique join the football team and play for a scholarship to college. You didn't need to watch your weight and need the right body and facial cues to get into modeling or acting. You didn't need parents who were former alumni to get into a fraternity or sorority to "get your foot in the door". You didn't even need to be an A+ student to work on the Hardon Collider or a nuclear power plant. All you needed? A high school diploma, a community college degree, good work ethic, good team spirit, a flexible mind, legit interest in something and a willingness to be creative and go out there. That's what making video games were about. That was our way of saying fuck you to every spoiled and unpleasant narcissistic asswipe we ever had to put up with in school.

But no, Bungie and Bethesda had to chase the military funding money and so as well got every cocksucking wannabe video game hobby overglorified journalist out there also wanting to be drip fed military residuals and try to get political attention to become a big name in the news media world. We had those sponge ass motherfuckers come and taint fucking everything with their horseshit of linking up with the assholes who were ruining the country and still didn't get what was coming to them after they graduated. Sorry if I'm sounding super vindictive, but it's true. Post mid 1990s so many overprivileged kids got fat heads thinking they'll run everything like a bunch of spoiled asshole royalty that never deserved it. Society in the mid to late 2000s catered to them. Then they ran everything into the ground into the 2010s. Look at everything now.

And now with the shit that is now "Geek chic is now popular", they've brought in the ugly girls and poor black rung thugs to act as their personal army to ensure they'll keep running the money machine as long as it will last before they head out to Epstein's sex dungeon as they see America; fuck, the world, collapse.

Microsoft’s head of gaming has said the company’s decision to cut 1,900 jobs was ultimately the result of a lack of growth in the industry.
In January, Microsoft announced plans to lay off roughly 8% of the 22,000 people employed across Xbox, Bethesda and Activision Blizzard.
The company completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023, in the process taking ownership of franchises including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo and Overwatch.
In a message sent to staff when the job cuts were announced, Spencer said the decision was taken after Microsoft and Activision’s leadership teams “set priorities, identified areas of overlap, and ensured that we’re all aligned on the best opportunities for growth”.
Reflecting on the layoffs in a new interview with Polygon, Spencer said a lack of industry growth was forcing publicly traded companies across the industry to cut costs.
Game developer Farhan Noor, who has been tracking job cuts dating back to the start of 2022 on videogameslayoffs.com, estimates that around 10,500 games industry employees were laid off last year. And less than four months into 2024, some 8,000 planned jobs cuts are already thought to have been confirmed.
