my hypothesis for rekieta to go to a church like this is because it was part of his social identity since he was a child and cannot cut that tie until now. if you go to a liberal church, they don't offer anything that requires any work or effort so, subconsciously, he doesn't value that church. that is why you see rekieta mocking christianity so hard on easter sunday. if rekieta had any belief in christ, he wouldn't do it on easter, of all days.

But it kind of goes into why people would attend a Unitarian Universalist church, which only asks that you believe in something beyond yourself, even if that something is like "charity." People long for a moral guide, in community with others, and they are willing to go to church to have that, but they are not always willing to be challenged on whatever secular status they have. So they might attend a church that's very wishy-washy about who exactly Jesus was or how exactly miracles happened, because it's embarrassing, and they will focus on his "good teachings and example."

I think you're right, the little I watched of the clips has him going on and on about how "Jesus was just a little baby. Just a gross little baby who cried all the time. You would think God would have made it so he didn't poop while he was human, but no." Based on the delivery, that could be a believing Christian comic's routine. Humor isn't forbidden or anything. It's just that Nick takes it all the way up to where his anger sounds pretty genuine and he's joking about pivotal things in a way that it sounds like that was a real frustration he wanted to get out instead of just an "observation." But he is probably trying to play it off as just that.

No, you're not supposed to turn your back on sinners, but you're also not supposed to enable them.

Hate to derail with more theology sperging but man people really have a twisted idea of what it means to love and have the backs of sinners. It doesn't mean you just tolerate it, you have to call the behavior out, out of love for the sinner and hate of the destruction the sin is bringing upon the sinner and his loved ones.

Null unironically took the most Christian approach which was simply "hey we can still be internet fwends but please for the love of all that is sane stop drinking". Very charitable especially since at that point null had every right to unconditionally cut nick off.

As a general comment, you can be nice to someone who is fucking up--even as a Christian. You need to tell them you care for them, but you cannot support or endorse the behaviour. You cannot even appear to do so.

Treating fallen Christian brothers and sisters is similar to treating addicts: you have to care for the person but not enable the bad habit. You let them know it is wrong amd they need to change, but it is really up to them to want to do it.

It is fine if Gosney wants to take a soft approach and perhaps do it in private, but there is a difference between 'soft' and 'enabling'. As a fellow Christian I caution Gosney not to fall into this trap, and I am unimpressed so far. Many of is tried this soft approach with Nick and he blew it off.

Some people, like Don Rickles, could pull that off, but this man is no Don Rickles, who could viciously roast a Mafia dude to his face and have the guy love it.
