Finished season 3 of Gintama, overall a blast:
* Kin arc was one episode too long but still nice team arc.
* Previous shogun arc was kino, no shit Tsukuyo is the most popular heroine when she gets the spotlight in some of the best arcs. Wish it will change Katsura's character a bit considering it is a slight change in the status quo and he basically only exists for Elizabeth. Also Shogun sister reappears after literally 200+ episodes, the shogun himself is a total bro and probably the funniest slapstick character.
* Obi 1 was too silly at the start, but it's nice to have shinpachi and his sister get some character development so he's not just walking glasses.
* Final dog episode was tearjerking and a great ending for the season.
Dude season 3 has some of the highest points in the series for. It's still insane to me how Gintama has the greatest arcs in anime sometimes just sandwiched in together casually.
Kintoki, Courtesan of a Nation, Obi1 all literally being within a 13 episode run still makes me astounded.
Also let's be fair... this is probably the greatest anime opening of all time.

I kind of blame deadlines since while I have ragged on monthly series in the past but they do generally have better art, also the fact that it seems like a number of newer people are jumping straight from webcomics or online stuff straight to manga doesn't help when before they would spend a few years at as an assistant learning from the old guard, or getting an art degree (I forget which director was it but one of the older made new animators practice realistic figure and gesture drawings before letting them animate).
Fair it stopped being a thing with Millennials cause they refused to take any sort of tutoring from an established figure. It also helps to have solid inspiration and try to pursue them instead of cannibalizing contemporary styles which I see a ton of. There are a ton of manga artists from the 80s like Hara and Miura who cited Gustave Dore as an inspiration just like I did and it really shows in the work.
Also one thing that I think is lacking more then detail is paneling or how they frame their drawings. I like urasawa but I don't actually think his actuall artwork is that overly detailed, but he's great at facial expressions and features, body gestures, and a clean flow from panel to panel (iirc he started as a storyboard artist for commercials before making manga) also good opportunity to bring up manben to see how he and a few well know artist draw
https://youtu.be/X_3Ed6jIiEw?si=paRNa1iWdonraUqQ
I like Urasawa for pretty much the same reason, semi realistic anatomy and high expressiveness. Also I already have all the manben seasons locally archived, I dont know if anybody has uploaded Neo Manben S2 anywhere or its still ongoing.
This is also why I think something like Ashita no Joe and most tezuka works still hold up despite objectively being closer in comparison to the "calarts" style (and if I'm allowed to mention western artists, same goes for Carl Barks and Bill Waterson).
Calarts is a product of low budget and laziness/narcissistic arrogance where people refuse to use art basics like anatomy and visual language (things like ugly characters signify evil, handsome/beautiful characters signify good. Will Eisner who himself was Jewish wrote about all this in his visual language books despite people today claiming big nose is antisemitic independent of context). Carl Barks, Bill Waterson and Tezuka were products of Disneyfication in the 50s and 60s which is a stylistic change towards cartooning not radical stupidity. Theyre not remotely comparable with calarts and in fact Manga/comic book artists started out as cartoonists working on cartoon strips. Calarts as a descriptor is only applicable in anime/manga as far as the shading and style is concerned, anatomy is still intact albeit very generic/replaceable unlike beanmouth shit. Nobody uses crosshatching or blacks for tonality anymore because digital sucks for inking, instead everybody just overlays a ton of screentones everywhere which is lazy compared to the painstaking inking work in say Fist of the North Star or anything of that time.

The predominant dogma in western media today is that the concept of a stereotype is inherently bad unless its a capitalist/white stereotype which both sucks and is severely limiting. Which is also why Dragon ball and supposed racist steroetypes in manga feel good to read.

I prefer the 9th opening
It's just summarizes the series in a way that can't be matched with showing tons of characters and having a funny tone with some cool moments. Other openings usually make the show look too serious.

Focusing on the mage exam for so long instead of the freak of the week format from the first 17 episodes or so was a mistake imo. Rather, the less focus that was put on the "journey" the less I gave a shit.
I completely agreed while watching it but now that I've read the manga* I understand why they stayed faithful. It sets up a lot of important character stuff for the continuing story despite feeling like a dumb battle exam out of nowhere. It mostly returns to episodic journey stuff again afterwards but unlike before they almost feel like filler sometimes, now that the main plot(s) are rolling.

(*Not as good as the masterpiece of zoomer filtration that is the anime; wait for season 2 imo.)

I always thought Stairway Generation did what the Togenkyou Alien did better but I'm totally biased because I love Stairway Generation. You can't beat the shit eating grins at the start though. It's the ultimate "we're fucking back".

I was going to post an ending but I don't think I could choose a favorite when it comes to endings. I love the first twenty almost equally.

Rereading Dragon Ball makes it obvious how big the downgrade from Freeza to the rest of the series is. Not just storywise but also artistically, you could tell Toriyama was getting tired.

Freeza almost looked like a huge mythological story coming to life in front of your eyes. It weaved so many themes and subplots seamlessly. I think it's very underrated, possibly because the manga kept going after that and Cell/Buu were very popular but not that well written.

Toriyama truly outdid himself with this.

Always thought Tongenkyou Alien was a little too repped for some reason. I don't know, maybe it's the song itself not doing as much for me as others. My one Gintama shirt still is one of all their shiteating grins, though.
Stairway Generation is pretty damn great. The drop when we get all the side characters floating through the sky is one of the best money shots for an opening. It's up there with Ready, Steady, Go for me in how much life it injects. Also I forget how many times they parody their own intros.

Gintama OP and ED Tier List.png

Posting this thing I made a long ass time ago because I'll probably never have a better opportunity to share this with people.
Man, looking back I was a little too hard on some of these. OP 8 has some of the best visuals for the openings, 10 is severely underated and Prey is the song that got me hooked on the series.
I'd probably move Day X Day and Balance Doll up a lot higher too. ED 15 is worth it just for the Character Popularity Poll Arc.
Damnit, I forget just how much better Gintama is than literally anything else. Even the stuff that is relatively lower level for Gintama is still some of the best stuff out there.
There's a reason this is my favorite thing ever.

Putting Ending 13 and Ending 2 anywhere below SS tier should have you put away like the dirty criminal you are. Other than that, relatively solid list.

I always feel ashamed for skipping EDs, I probably should be

You should totally do a crosspost with the Western Animation/Cartoon Industry thread or other art-related threads, really shows how much expectations have changed in the medium within the past generation.

Though in keeping to anime-related topics, the rescue scenario about how replacing the hunk with a nerd changes the tone is so prevalent in anime that it's practically become a staple in romance in anime now. I mean, the average Japanese man isn't an Adonis by any stretch, which is why Japanese nerds are more exaggerated than American nerds in cartoons. And yet, oddly enough, there's something endearing about a nerd rescuing a pretty girl, though maybe that's because I've watched so much romance anime nowadays that they're much more willing to change up stereotypes and play them for both comedic and romantic effects.

'Course shoujo still makes sure the main lead is your typical bishounen (for the most part), it's other series where a nerdy guy rescuing the pretty girl is treated with more respect. It's neat.

Anyone's thought's on this upcoming one?
I read some of the manga a while back and liked it. I think it really depends on how well it gets animated.
Sorry Sonarr is saying that Sakura season 4 came out very recently, is that right?
There are three seasons so far (the two from the 90s and the one that came out relatively recently), with the fourth one coming soon, I think.

I'm not sure if the seasons match up tbh, my download for Sakura had four seasons that ended up being three in Sonarr, with Clear Card from 2018 being the fourth season that I had to download seperately

For another perspective, I've recently blew steam out my bum back in Comicsgate about how anime and manga have made cultural significance enough to be symbolic and not only represent Japanese sequential art, but to how it truly embodies the sort of creative freedom, imaginative potential, and artistic integrity that American comic books are supposed to have heralded but have failed to honor in the United States. In defense of the "generic" style we see in anime and manga, that is at least a springboard for anyone's ideas to be portrayed in the style and communicates that at least there could be quality and effort on the author's part. That pastel hair, big eyes, big boobs, moe neoteny physique, energy powers, big swords, and huge robots showed the world something and it has become a mythos and legend into themselves. At least they are a gateway. I can't say the same of for the alternative.

OVAs like Lodoss War literally used John Martin biblical apocalypse paintings as a template for their in-universe fantasy murals. And Berserk verbatim references Germanic lore like the Nibelungenlied (which imo says a lot about the scope of research Miura actually did).
