In general, I'll just say that I'm thoroughly convinced that 80% of the DSM, if I'm being generous, is a complete crock of shit, as is the "mental health awareness" push to pathologize and overmedicate every personal failing or natural human variation in personality, aptitude, or predisposition. I won't sperg too hard about why because I try to keep it to the Thunderdome, but I don't think it's too much to state the obvious and point out that there is a feedback loop perpetuating this - the average person is more than happy to quell any feelings of personal inadequacy by embracing the idea that every shortcoming is actually a medical problem (and has absurd expectations of doctors in general), and pharmaceutical companies are willing to oblige the demand for a bullshit magic pill for every bullshit psych case knowing perfectly well that it won't fucking work and they've snagged themselves a lifelong customer.
With the exponential increase of newly diagnosed "ADHD" cases that somehow managed fine their whole lives until being suddenly diagnosed many years into adulthood, I see a whole lot of people firsthand that make me wonder what in the hell a doctor is thinking to keep prescribing them stimulants. Actual full-blown stimulant psychosis is thankfully not something I see too often, but a huge proportion (if not the majority) of this population are so transparently manic, high-strung and twitchy on their stimulants, even if they acted normal before. More often than not they also run into problems sleeping (shocker) and then end up with an additional prescription for benzos or Seroquel or something to compensate. Shit like this is why nobody should really be surprised at the ease with which a dedicated munchie can bullshit their way into pretty much any treatment they want no matter how invasive, expensive or inappropriate.
The way she described it sounds like stimulant psychosis to me, which is paranoia pushed to a million and the boundary between fantasy and reality flimsy at best. If she wrote that this was how she was at the end of a 6 day crack binge, I'd believe her descriptions but not that she'd kept a diary of it.
