Can we discuss Rattlesnake Roundups ITT? They're basically zoosadism festivals marketed as family entertainment that are sadly legal since most Southern states have no legal protection for venomous snakes. Herpetologists have been trying to fight them for decades but unfortunately they still persist due to snakes being seen as an acceptable target for cruelty.

Hold up are you trying to tell me Snake Whacking Day is a real thing and not just a Simpsons joke? I thought that was a funny episode because of just how over the top it was.

I'm not sure where to even start on this but it should definitely qualify as zoosadism. The photo with the kid's bloody handprints is extremely disturbing, especially given what we know about how violence towards animals can impact their mental health long term.

Here's another short article. The girl pictured was a 'contestant at the Miss Snake Charmer pageant". I have no words.

It's also had a horrible effect on snake populations, especially since rattlesnakes are relatively slow to grow and reproduce. It's just that they're considered socially acceptable (and completely legal) targets for cruelty and mass slaughter so this shit persists.

A lot of people don't know about it but I think everyone does need to know about it, especially if they think horrific and completely legal animal cruelty shit only happens in countries like China.

Zoosadism, even legal zoosadism, is a problem all over the world and I think will be whenever you have a type of animal it's legal and viewed as socially acceptable to be cruel to.

I can also confirm that the types of small, rural, southern communities RRs are held in tend to have serious and poorly treated issues with shit like mental illness, intergenerational abuse, addiction, etc. Kids being normalized to cruelty like that early absolutely doesn't help.
