I actually agree with both users. Idpol was intended to divide the left and right on superficial stuff and to keep them from seeing the bigger picture. But intersectionality is a whole different can of worms that has taken over as a core of progressivism. The goal of intersectionalism is less about dividing people and more about putting people who meet certain checkmark on top while beating the others down. The US should 100% try to build high speed rail between large cities, but we've got bigger problems and planes work just fine for the most part.

I think that people fixate too much on intercity rail and completely ignore regional branch lines despite them making up the vast majority of services, connecting cities with nearby towns is far better for lowering the amount of cars on the road since commuters are probably the largest source of passenger traffic and offering a useable alternative to driving would definitely help with that.

Cars are so good that even though we literally built the entire village around making them less good, people still use them.

It's a good 30 minute walk to the nearest train station from the middle of Poundbury, if you're building a small town that isn't directly connected to transit networks then of course people are going to use their cars instead.

Are these people okay? You need an incentive for labor or for any service. “You just need to do X, Y, and Z… BECAUSE YOU JUST HAVE TO… OKAY?” Transportation is not any different. While Amtrak is decaying and decrepit, Brightline is continuing service and improving its private business model. This is why these people will never get the utopia they desire. Even though I wish trains to be as profitable, it’s clear that cars have won the lottery and innovated better than trains in the American economy. Ironically, that is partly due to government intervention with the Interstare highways and all that. The Federal Government basically ruined trains. I wonder how long it will take until they notice that.

Gosh, so many things wrong with that. First is the shifting use of the word "efficient", public transit is only efficient when full, not actually making things work better. You can't also have more businesses because for every business you need them to be supplied properly (with big trucks and stuff) unless you want things to be stupidly expensive because they can't get it there by normal truck (Manhattan, isolated places like islands).

The other thing is assuming that more people = better. I've brought up Delhi before. On paper, it looks like a winner. Twice as dense as Tokyo. Second largest city in the world. And it has serviceable rail transit. Reality is it's not even the best economy in India because of a massive poverty problem, and a shithole both metaphorically and in the literal sense.

Plus, there isn't actually a functional city that they describe that works the way they imagine. Tokyo has an extensive road network with elevated highways in downtown. Amsterdam has wide avenues and numbered highways. New York City may have low car ownership but rely heavily on a taxi system.

This is not even getting into the "externalities" part, which is literally "fuck you, that's why" reasoning.

A good example is the DMV vs AAA, DMV is absolute shit goverment service, so AAA is able to make a profit by simply being better and charging for it. If all we had was goverment monopolies, then we only have lowest bidder bare minimums.
