I don’t know anything about the Canadian system, but SURELY she would meet the criteria for an involuntary psych hold?

If she was in the U.K. I have no doubt she would be costing the state an eye-watering amount of money to keep her locked up and under constant 1:1 supervision.

I guess the main complicating factor is that mental health hospitals aren’t set up to accommodate patients who need a high level of support for medical/mobility reasons (in the U.K., mental health nursing and general nursing are two very different training pathways and they aren’t interchangeable) so I wonder if Kelly exists in a no man’s land? There will be nursing homes for very disabled people, and psychiatric hospitals for the intractably mentally ill, but nowhere that really caters for both.

This is the one thing people ask constantly both in this thread and on every video or forum that discusses her but everyone seems to either forget or gloss over the fact that she has been involuntary and voluntarily committed in the past.
She takes her pills like a good girl, promises to never do it again and winds up back at home.

Yes, part of this is because we (canadians) lack the funds, doctors and facilities, but it's also more complicated than that. The mental health system has been used and abused in the past to take away people's rights and any new involuntary commitment could set a new precedent that then sees anyone sick of their neighbor or spouse having them locked away.

Munchausen is VERY hard to prove, you'd have to be caught on film doing it and even then you could say it was only that once. She's not threatening or attempting suicide*, it's not illegal to harm yourself in these ways (again it's about not wanting to set a precedent for what people can do to their own bodies) and you cannot force anyone to take their pills (even if you kill someone in a schizophrenic episode and are released from a ward you cannot be forced to take medications).

Cases like Kelly's are very rare and while it seems obvious to all of us she needs help, she is an adult, she is not a danger to society and not threatening to kill herself* so unless it is determined that she is not mentally capable of taking care of herself (in a retardation sense, not that she may just flay herself) and is appointed a guardian there is very little they can do that wouldn't open a whole can of legal worms.

*I know what you're all thinking, read my response to Barbarella before holding down your caps button and screaming that this is suicidal.

I think Kelly’s mental illness is much deeper than just being a Munchie. Picking off both your legs, pulling out teeth (and hair) and opening up stumps is horrifying and I doubt it’s attention-based. Something else is driving her. This woman is incredibly mentally ill-who knows what goes on in her head that causes her to destroy herself, but in this case, it feels more complicated than a factitious disorder.

Did you hear her pointing out her stump? She pointed between her legs and said “I pee from here” and it was very very weird. There is no helping her.

She is mentally ill, absolutely but first and foremost she is an addict.
Yes, her addiction is attention and her method of getting it is extreme, but there are few things that push a human to the deepest depths more reliably than an addiction.

It's Munchausen interlaced with the myriad of drugs she's been eating over the years for her real injuries and treatments for her fake ones, it's having no support system (through her own actions) on the outside. It's boredom, its compulsion, its probably a personality disorder or two as well.

Someone with trichotillomania (pulling out their hair) or dermatillomania will tell you they don't like the results of their compulsion, that it hurts to do and can cause irreversible damage, but can't stop themselves from doing so, and that a lot of the pain you just get used to. Same with junkies who use needles, or a body modder who splits their dick in two; it's all just part of feeding the beast.
And this leads back to my *s above as well; she is not suicidal. She has shown by going to the doctors that she has a will to live (not get better, just survive) and you can't be locked up for picking at your own skin. She is an addict and asking why she picks and scratches and digs is like asking why an alcohol goes to the liquor store.
Like a lot of addicts, she's killing her body and like a lot of addicts, the things she's doing to get her fix in themselves are not illegal. An alcoholic can destroy their liver, be in and out of the ICU and can be prescribed treatment but it's not illegal for them to keep drinking, even if you and I know its killing them.

Just my opinion but I think while attention is one driver I also think she has something seriously mentally wrong with her. Theres a lot of self harm in the world but most of it is reasonably minor (cutting,) or indirect ( munchie shit) but what she does is so extreme and so direct. Just being able to do that to yourself means something somewhere is very wrong. She would be fascinating to have as a patient. And terrifying

I really don’t expect to see anything about her come up again. Like others have mentioned, at this point she’s likely receiving comfort care and no one is looking at extraordinary measures to try and save a young woman’s legs to preserve function and quality of life.

It’s always possible though - if the same dr is cursed enough to be part of her care, they may share an update and it’s possible it could be shared as one of “holy shit look at this” cases that are posted just for sharing rare/interesting/educational situations and not wanting consultation or input.

I haven't been back to this thread since just after she got her stumps. This is sad, but I'm amazed it took her this long TBH.

She's probably been offered MAID several times, but because she's a munchie she would never accept it. Death means no more attention. Which is probably worse than death for a munchie.

I'm pretty sure she knows this is going to kill her eventually, but like the millions of diabetics that drink real soda and eat candy it's a future her problem. She isn't dead yet and she'll quit tomorrow, that attitude does a lot of heavy lifting for addicts of all stripes.

I think about Kelly a lot, even though I don't read her thread much. I think of her leg photos and just marvel at how she's even still alive. It seems so crazy that infection hasn't carried her off long ago. She could be a case study just on the ability of the human body to hold on to life under crazy circumstances. She must have an incredible immune system.

I think the only way she could be stopped is a permanent hold with permanent 1:1 and have her hands completely wrapped up and no access to anything she could get in her mouth to continue. Obviously that would never be allowed, but that's still the only way she'd stop.

I had forgotten she had a twin. My heart breaks for her, Kelly makes me sad, I can only imagine what her twin feels. I suspect, like a lot if people with family who've been suffering a long time, that her twin low-key hopes Kelly just keels over one day. And soon. Because as much as that would hurt, it would be over. She could move on and heal.

Unlikely unless she decides she wants a maggot saga. It’s not terribly warm in Canada yet, even in BC so there won’t be a massive fly population and really only total neglect and lack of covering is likely to result in a maggot infestation. If it’s covered with gauze or clothing, and even occasionally cleansed it’s pretty unlikely. The only instances I’ve seen in Canada of insects in wounds have been in instances of homelessness or severe mental illness and neglect. Kelly may well be fucked in the head, but her wounds are certainly not

I’m Canadian born and raised and the entirely of my career in the medical field has taken place in Canada and I have to say, I’ve never personally know MAID to be offered to someone. Not saying it doesn’t happen, it very well could. But the only times I’ve seen it discussed have been when the patience brings it up - including in cases of terminal cancer and the like. I’ve asked around a little too out of curiosity and no one I know has seen an instance where MAID is recommended to someone who didn’t ask for it first, end of life care discussions are still all about comfort care etc etc I am however in a different province than Kelly, so who knows what they’re doing in BC.

I know the MAID for mental illness has been escandalo for ages, but it’s not like everyone who presents with depression or anxiety symptoms is being told to kys

Gotcha. Super unlikely. Pretty sure you can only get medical maggots here by applying for special access use and it’s reviewed case by case. Im not even sure what would qualify someone - The standard surgical debridement is what she’d be in for if there’s any dead tissue that needs removing. I think they’re actually really difficult to get your hands on here so not sure if the reason it’s not used more is just a supply thing or what. Must admit, not my area of expertise by a mile.

I had this thought the other night…when does the munchie stop being a munchie? Did kelly munch herself into amputation? Yep. Absolutely.

But like….is that it? The stuff she does to herself is so beyond what any human should be able to do to themselves. She wants attention, obviously. But there is also something horrifically wrong with her brain. It’s almost like her lizard brain is missing.

I'm certain it would be in bad taste for any medical professional to suggest MAID, it's something that someone should probably seek out, unless I'm mistaken. It would be the equivalent of a Dr telling you to 86 yourself.

As far as maggot therapy goes, it has to be in a controlled environment where the Dr can monitor, apply, and remove the maggots. There is also the aspect of the wound dressing to protect and contain the maggots as they do their job. The only time maggots ever have free reign is when the individual is homeless and has wild maggots.

Kelly is better off isolated in a hospice left to her own devices. That way she can just munch herself to death without wasting valuable resources.
