Faust based her pitch for what would become G4 entirely on her own memories of playing with the G1 toys, which she even still has and showed on twitter some years back. Each of the main six ponies in G4 has a direct inspiration from an original G1 pony (going so far as to make Twilight Sparkle's mother based on G1 Twilight, the original template for Twilight Sparkle), except Applejack who is a direct translation of the original G1 design. Spike, too, is based entirely on G1 Spike.

There's also the matter of what is known as G3.5, which is the main reason why the brand got such a negative reputation before G4.

To add to this /co/ was the most autistic board out there at the time, even worse in some aspects than /a/, so MLPFiM was like a nuke being dropped on an entire continent doused from head to toe in gasoline. Post ponies!"

It got so bad and out of control that Moot eventually decided that it was better to annex the pony threads to their own containment board, and thus /mlp/ was born - a blight and cancer upon 4chan's face. If Moot hadn't done this I don't think we'd have as many pedo furries as we do now because whatever is created on 4chan eventually trickles down into the mainstream portions of the internet. The key difference here is that it wasn't just a meme or a phrase - it was an entire subculture that mainly revolved around the discussion of fucking pastel cartoon horses. And once those who were exceptionally retarded such as Trainboy54 and impressionable, mentally unstable teens with unrestricted internet access took notice of bronies it was all over.

From my subjective observation, the most powerful encouragement for children toys and games, was other children.
Mild PL, but a lot of my parent's friends were loony lefties of the 80s etc, so I saw first hand this proto child encouragement of non gender specific toys and shizzle, but the instant any of these kids made friends with other kids at school, they tended to take on "boys" or "girls" toys and tastes.

Later by pre teen 8-10 ish, and actual teenage, they tended to solidify a bit more into a personal identity, maybe they were a bit more open minded than the kids who hadn't had this parental influence by then, but not massively different or unusual in the main.

I’m gonna disagree that annexing the Bronies to /mlp/ contributed as much to their presence as you’d think, since community sites like EquestriaDaily and Fimfiction already existed in 2011 according to the Wayback machine, while the /mlp/ board was only created in February of the following year.

/co/ may have kickstarted things, but the Brony fandom was already self sufficient months before /mlp/ was created. If anything, I think not annexing the Bronies to that board would’ve led to the cancer metastasizing across the rest of the site, turning 4chan into an anon furry community

Pretty much this, the board is and was a blight, but the main traffic at the time was off-site either on Tumblr or stand-alone websites like fimfic.

Plus, some Tumblrs were huge at the time, so much so that actual off-site drama and attention was generated off of them, like the whole Molestia debacle that killed the ask-blog and splintered it into the Princess Luna one - Or other ones of renown, if you can call it that, like MurderShy, IpsyWitch, Lil' Miss Rarity and one I'm amazed is still alive to date( I think), The Rouge Diamond.

I'm pretty confident it's the rose tinted idea of 19th/early 20th century americana. Even though if the 2012 era fedora wearer was in early 20th century America they would kill themselves, since you cant be NEET and get sympathy cheques and hard labour of the unskilled was essentially killing yourself in an asbestos mine for company fun bucks (scrip). this was back in like 2013 so it was during the prime of *tips fedora^ faggotry.
