I guess the advantage is you don't need to invent a character that looks different enough from anyone who might sue you. If they're doing mocap, chances are the model has already agreed to lend their likeness to the character.

Facial motion capture is industry standard so yes, the closer the character is to the actor portraying them it can help. I guess in this case it depends if that woman was just the model they scanned or if she's also acting as the character. It could be possible some of the changes to the face were due to the actor having a different facial structure or something, but I doubt it.

Confession and perspective: I was a League player around the time the character of Fiora was reworked.

Iron Stylus would be a baldfaced liar if he said it was accepted ANYWHERE. ALL the major League fan hubs of the time were pretty much aghast wondering why the hell Fiora looked like a rich, evil, white-dwarf-starlet grandma on the level of Cruella de Ville or Yzma with none of the charm. The original and reworked (especially with further skins/splash arts) Fioras since show a woman who has a natural beauty but hardness to her face due to her career choice as a fencer/fighter, not the natural ugliness Iron Stylus wanted.

Iron Stylus also based the character of Leona on his (possibly ex- by now? IDK) wife, and she has always consistently been beautiful since release - how convenient he wouldn't uglify her. That said, once he left Riot, Leona has since become a lesbian in lore and twitterinas want her to be a muscled dommy-mommy in physique due to her being a tank archetype in gameplay, while they also try to downplay her other major lore issue is she's a tribal warrior with rather nazi-esque zealotry in eliminating all who she deems heretics. Go figure.
