@Odd Opossum I agree with most of what you said, but I'll go over two things:
No matter how much religious people profess morals and spirituality, if the religion in question is fundamentally immoral, then it's all moot. We're quick to forget how the Abrahamic faiths are essentially "worship me or I'll make you suffer for eternity; don't ask questions because I know best". If this is at the core of your moral system, it will absolutely taint you and how you see other people - even if nicer things like "love thy neighbor" also happen to be there. So when the worst kinds of people say they're a firm believer in Christ or Allah, I have no problem taking them at their word. This isn't directed at you, but it annoys me how even most atheists will use the lame "you're so pious/devout, yet look at how immoral you are" gotcha. Why were they were expecting better from someone with a fucked up belief system because of that very system? That leads me to:I call bullshit on anyone who actively posts online, especially on a forum like this, trying to act like they're spiritual and in connection with a higher moral power.
Agreed, but I always see it as them being inherently nice, and in spite of their religion.Christians in real life can be nice
They pretty much are. The same goes for all religious texts. Stuff like Ayurveda were just primitive people attempting to make sense of diet, medicine, healing, etc. so I do think it's a bit unfair to call them 100% magic asspulls. But as soon as something gets the "GOD SAID SO" stamp, it's all downhill from there. There is not one Muslim on this planet that can justify how pork is uniquely harmful compared to everything that's permitted or ignored by Islam, yet it's something they'll beat people to death over.In Leviticus, the hebrews are also prohibited from eating shellfish. Though this was probably due to the hygiene standards of the time.
I'm convinced a lot of early biblical commandments are actually just life advice disguised as divine mandate.
