Not really, I knew a few. I wasn't all broken up over OJ gutting that (((White))) woman like a fish. I think all the attention paid to it pissed me off, and it was at a weird time when a real racial skirmish felt like it might happen. I was a freshly minted "adult" around that time, so I remember a bit more what was going on. The Rodney King stuff, the oj stuff, the riots, and the Reginald Denny stuff as well. Was more, if they convict this nigger the entire state might get burned down. It was played by the media as a black v white thing, when it was more a cheating wife vs pissed off husband thing.

Now i'm not proud of my thoughts on it back then, not at all, but it was more "fuck this cheating whore, she got what she deserved" Now I see it much differently, and the follow up where he got involved in stealing some sports shit, and got hit with a 30 year sentence (and served like 10) I was more pissed at this dumb dude for fucking up again.

Which isn't to say his story is true, though probably he was as much a twerp at 9 as at 40, and he seems exactly like THAT KID - there's always one - the most off-putting, irritating, and not-nearly-so-smart-as-he-thinks-he-is disruptive spaz 4th grade fat boy that no one likes - and that's exactly the low-self-regulation kid who would be zooming around a classroom and acting like an ass for attention. That's the kid who winds up wiggling gunt in a Portuguese street corner beat-down and drunkenly eating tortas in a rusted shack down Merida way after deadbeat-dadding two kids under 2.

Which is why I said he was home on the sofa with mom if he watched it. Kids did skip school or stay home to watch it. There’s usually a kernel of truth to Gunt’s lies

I was also a school kid during the verdict, it was definitely on every public TV in restaurants, lobbies, bars, etc…but not elementary classrooms. Some High School students got teachers to pull in the TV cart to watch it , but most skipped class if they wanted to see it live, but that’s teenage kids not elementary school.

I don’t believe an elementary school teacher had her 4th grade class watch a trial verdict about a black guy murdering his wife. Elementary Schools would have kept that on the TV in the office and teachers lounge, not a classroom. I could believe some might tell their students about the verdict afterwards.

The verdict was a big deal, and adults did stop what they were doing to watch it, but it wasn’t for little kids. You think 9 year old Ethan was also reading The National Enquirer updates every week too? He barely has the reading comprehension now to keep up with reading news stories. I’m sure Sandra left tabloids laying around the house and he looked at the pictures. Kernels of truth.

I think your time frame is a little off there, channel one started getting rolled out in the early early 90s, and they had put them in most schools. My tiny little shit rural town had em when i was a freshman in 1990, so by the time the OJ stuff happened they would have be pretty standard all over. It was on little monitors iirc, right beside the intercom.

It makes sense that Ralph tries to emulate OJ as they both are known for getting away with crimes people wanted to see them go to jail for.

The difference is OJ got away with his shit despite prosecutors sparing no expense to convict him. Ralph gets away with his shit because he knows he's not worth the cost it'll take to extradite him. They are not, and will not, be the same.

Your tiny rural shit town had it because it was out of Tennessee and poor shit rural school districts (or poor ghetto schools) were targeted first because they were the easiest to get into. They started with schools desperate for any resources that would welcome a marketing scam just to get free TVs!!!! and content to show students.

Poor schools were far less likely to question the motives of such an operation and were also desperate for equipment. After poor schools were infiltrated the company could start trumpeting how many schools they were in to lend credence to the operation to get into less desperately poor school districts. “We aren’t a marketing ploy, look we are already in 1000 schools throughout the south and Midwest! Read the student and teacher testimonials!”

Anyway Channel One was only for student ages 13-18, it wasn’t for elementary school students. It also didn’t do “live” programming. If channel one covered OJ, and I’m sure it did, it would have been in a prerecorded shows and broadcast to classes a week after the verdict.

If schools wanted to show live TV to kids in the 1990’s they had to break out the old rabbit ears which never worked very well for schools variety of reasons. It’s why the VCR was always part of the TV cart.

All that aside, the verdict just wasn’t something they would have been interrupted class to show eight and nine year olds in elementary school classes. Ten years early they had a big project to have elementary kids watch the Challenger take-off and broadcast live to schools, this sort of ended enthusiasm to bringing live TV into elementary school classrooms. Even that was a difficult undertaking to get going and it had millions in funding to make it work.

While I’m sure white trash Sandra would have been yammering to Ralph about OJ ( and everything else she read in the tabloids) the average parent thought OJ wasn’t suitable material to discuss with small kids and would have been mad as hell if their 4th grader came home talking about watching the verdict at school. Elementary school teachers would have ducked into the teachers lounge, or admin offices, to watch the verdict but it wouldn’t have been watched in their classrooms.

If Ralph was in high school his story would be more believable - at least the part about watching it live in class not his weird bragging about rubbing a nigger getting away with murder in the faces of little girls.

It’s weird he even implies there were boy vs girl lines drawn about OJ in 4th grade, or for any age. The verdict reaction was strictly white vs black. The only people happy about OJ getting off were black people. Black women and men were dancing in the streets, white people were just stunned and horrified a black guy could buy off the American criminal justice system now too.

Never did I base any part of my life or philosophy on wrasslin. O.J. Simpson brutally murdered his ex-wife and some schmuck waiter that was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The closest comparison you might get is one time Four Horsemen member Chris Benoit's brutal double murder suicide of his wife and child. Its funny, I was in my early teens at the time and I remember thinking he was innocent untill the DNA evidence was presented. After that I stopped following the trial. Funny thing is, kinda like how the NG kept cali from burning down, it might have also saved my life.

The day of, I had skipped school. At the time I lived in miami and would sometimes skip and just take busses to explore the city. That day I got on the wrong bus and didnt realise it till I saw we were goung into liberty city. I figured I'd just stay on the bus until it came back out again. When I didnt get off at the last stop before crossing under I95, the driver, and older black man waved me over and told me sit right behind him. I figured he was just worried about this gangly white boy getting fucked with.

After we got back to the station the driver pulked me aside and asked if I was crazy or stupid. I got confused and he told me that the OJ verdict dropped as the bus was in liberty city. Hed been listening to trial coverage on a little transistor radio. I had no clue the verdict was dropping that day, I just wanted to skip school.
