Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Is it me or why is that when i emulate on mobile my head aches like crazy feels like the small screen really fucks with my head.
That's because phones should be used only the send texts and voice/video calls. nothing more.
I long for the days of the Java Phones instead of this wiretap shitdroid.

Back to handheld emulation: Avoid the ARM cashgrab emuboxes lol. They're basically manufactured for basically 4 cents and sold for 40$. There's also a whole discussion about those, but the gist is to better stick to x84_64 whenever possible. Unless you want to build it for yourself, then knock yourself out, that's a fun experiment.

Ignore the ARM fandom, they're idiots who live in reddit.

R36S looks like a really fun retro gaming handheld and I want to buy one for the Spring season

I think on eBay they‘re selling a 128GB version of it for over $75+, which is not that bad of a price.

So many retro handhelds out there now. We're spoiled for choice.

Wonder how long till we see the Steam Deck drop in price?

If you wanna toy around with it yourself, I used mGBA 0.10.3
Thanks, will try.

I still want to play UMK3 on the go. Is the DS port any good?
I personally hate most old vs games, including MK, for their ruthless ai even in lower difficulties, Puzzle Kombat (included in UMK DS) ain't half bad.

Android enemies get a pass
Why?
Alien Isolation did that very well
Nope, its title is a complete misnomer, it's alien at first but soon we get humans, androids, aliens and no isolation, all the while having worse gameplay than Colonial Marines. Talk about overrated.

advanced wars 2
This mentioned with old phones reminded me of Ancient Empires, good times.

Is it worth the effort to use those programs that combine your emulators into one platform?
Not really, especially if you're low on storage, but sometimes you may have no other choice, Picodrive is the only emulator to emulate all Megadrive variations (except Advanced Pico Beena) on android and it's only available as a libretro core. Some others are also better and/or more convenient than their standalone version, like all Saturn or N64 cores.

@Book Thief @Celebrate Nite try chdssf, though iirc the latest versions don't need it.

I’ve used my fair share of Raspberry Pi’s and other SBCs, but a cheap mini PC is definitely the way to go. It’s easier to set up, you don’t have to buy a bunch of separate parts to put it together, and it has a much better performance to price ratio, even if you should expect to pay at least $100.

Nothing is good for PS2 emulation because of the fact that it does extremely nonstandard floating point operations.

These operations are hell to emulate.
Too bad the ps2 modding scene is slow as shit. Which reminds me why is they're barely any hd mods for the console? all of the 6th gen consoles have a hdmi mod or those 100$ dongles like gc2hd,except for the ps2 which in that case you're fucked to dealing with input lag on modern tvs or paying up the ass for retrotinks.

Is something like an old Dell Optiplex still a decent option or are they too low end these days?

Is it that bad? With lots of speedhacks and slowdowns, I could get pcsx2 to run Street Fighter EX 3 on a system with a lower end core2duo, a 9400 gt and 2GBs of ram. Are said mini PCs even worse than that?

Is there any thats good for 1080p ps2 emulation.
yes. there's even a router than can play PS2 games pretty good.

He's not providing examples, so I'm half-expecting him to talk out of his ass. Ever since Stenzek (Duckstation lead dev) also joined the PCSX2 team, the emulator got really good. It runs basically flawlessly (at least in 1x and 2x internal resolutions) most of the games I tried. Just a minor hiccup on a place in R-Type Final where even some models of PS2 would experience some slight slowdown.
yes, I know there won't be such thing as a perfect PS2 emulation due to how it was structured and most importantly, due to the very lacking documentations, but at this point nobody gives a shit anymore. The Driver CPU bug was fixed ages ago. If you're autistic enough to lose sleep over it, I'd recommend you PR pcsx2 to fix those issues.

AC4 is still playable and not good, due to that sun glitch and void textures. The R&C2 turret bug was fixed a year ago in the nightly, and even before that there was a python script to patch it out on the iso file. The wiki is still a good place to go for referencing. I still think that de-compilation projects beat all emulation on all fronts, but it's time consuming and there's not really many projects. It pisses me off to no end that it was just a fad due to Jak & Daxter's OpenGOAL project, I was hoping for more games to be ported on PC rather than using an emulator.

You're comparing recycled phones to x86. There's always a big caveat on those handhelds, some units work even better than in the video and some would refuse to turn on.

actually (with a bit of research) I was thinking of Kakuto Chojin, a different totally forgotten X Box fighter
Yep, that was the one, got it mixed up with Tao Feng. Dream Factory developed Kakuto Chojin so there were a bit of legit hype behind it, they were the people behind quirky fighters like Ehrgeiz and the Tobal games(and also The Bouncer which should have been a warning sign).

That's what I was thinking. About a year or two ago, you could supposedly get these anywhere and everywhere for £!00 or less. I saw supposedly because I never saw one locally. Here's the HP Elitedesk, a 1 litre PC.

Edit: I looked it up out of curiosity, and it turns out there are a bunch of new, budget mini PCs. I don't know how they compare, but they seem comparable, but with modern IGPUs and drivers.

Why? I don't see that as a problem.

I had a thread on the recent glut of chinese handhelds, and £65 for a cheapo handheld that plays GBA and PS1 is fine with me. I bought a Resberry Pi for about £85 a while ago, tinkered with it a month or two, then I put Botocera on it and gave to my brother as a birthday gift. He loves it, he even bought a third party case and cooler and fitted it himself (he's not a computer guy).

To me, anything beyond Playstation is where emulation starts to run into issues anyway.
