negrate me but this is one of the least egregious possible retcons, i think. yeah all the custodes we have known of so far are male, but there was never a lore reason why they had to be male, unlike with astartes. and even then that was retconned. primarchs as we understand them now are a relatively new creation. the only real issue i have with it is malc wanted emps to make some female primarchs because he felt like they would be more level headed, and big e said no specifically because he wanted a bunch of sons who would compete against each other and be bone heads in order to rapidly conquer the galaxy. the same logic would probably apply to custodes.

so it's not so much "it would be impossible for a female to be made into a custodes" but "why would he make one a custodes when he obviously doesn't see much need for the female perspective to be represented in his demigod warrior society"

If GW falsely wanted to give representation to women, why not create a character that is Fujoshi or Yumejo? because that is what more than half of his female audience is made up of, that is the true female representation. No woman really cares about this decision, the majority acts indifferent.

Out of touch corporation is told by politically charged idiots that diversity will make them more money because diversity and progressiveness is all the rage. Out of touch company starts to hire politically charged idiots to work on their IP, especially people who are unqualified because in the company's eyes diversity is more important than actual skill and experience. Said politically charged idiots proceed to insert their ideologies, shitty writing and politics into the universe changing it from escapism to political pandering and preaching.

Backlash ensues, company doubles down even harder and handles the backlash in the worst way possible. The entire time out of touch corpos are assured it has nothing to do with their terrible handling over the situation or their hamfisted preaching, they are on the right side of history and anyone who disagrees is a bigot.

Hobby proceeds to die a slow painful death over the course of years. Maybe it even manages to stick around holding on for dear life but it will never be the same again, it becomes an empty soulless depressing shell of what it used to be.

And with that I'm out. I just don't have it in me anymore to watch another hobby of mine get skull fucked by the cult of Slannesh.

I don't like this retcon and what it bodes for the future either, but to be fair on this wording, as far as I'm aware, GW has always dealt with their abundant retcons by just writing them in this manner assuming that the original canon never existed, The only time I can recall them outright acknowledging a retcon is when they recently re-edited the Dark Imperium novels to shift the timeline of the Indomitus Crusade.

Unfortunately, like the infamous "you will not be missed" statement, I expect this tweet will be used by ideological, power-mad jannies in big fan communities to gaslight, bludgeon, and ban dissenters en masse.

At this point, either GW backpedals once they realize that coomers and troons (redundant I know) don't blow nowhere near as much money as their core customers, or they collapse over doubling down and alienating the latter in favor of the former.

In all honesty, nothing needed to be changed, it was good as it stood.
The Custodes and Astartes enforce the Emperor's Will and protect the Imperium through vigilance, brutality and force. Naturally, they would be all men. The Sisters of Battle and of Silence enforce the Emperor's Will and protect the Imperium through enforcing conformism, purging ideological impurity, and insatiable fanaticism to the Imperial Cult. Naturally, they would be all women.
At least, that's my sense of it. You see it in real life. Violence is the trade of men. Purity is the trade of women. Men make the best soldiers but are usually very pragmatic on ideological grounds. But women? Women will more often be the most credulous and bull headed commissars you've ever seen. As things were, it only made sense in a universe where demons are real and humanity is experiencing multiple apocalypses at once.
