Oh, and, because everyone really wants my opinion "as a feemaleee":
I think this is an absolutely terrible idea and I'm really unhappy about it.
I'm unhappy about it because although it's always overwhelmingly been a male hobby, there have always been girls and women involved, and unusually for an overwhelmingly male hobby (especially a 'nerd' type one), you generally didn't get treated differently, or made unwelcome. You didn't get mansplained, or shit talked, or penises in your DMs. You went round the stores in peace.
As long as you behaved yourself within the accepted rules of conduct and conducted yourself according to community norms online, you didn't get any hassle.
Now the fucking culture wars have arrived. They have arrived not because of anything the "female playerbase" has done, or complained about, or got noisy about. We don't get noisy about a bloody thing. They have arrived because GW has thrown a hand grenade into what was a peaceable hobby.
The hobby is full of fucking autists. We all know this. Everyone got on okay as long as we all forcused on our special interest of toy soldiers. But now the formerly-peaceful political autist section of the community are starting to bring the culture war they engage in elsewhere on reddit and similar shitholes to 40k communities online. (I hope this won't spread offline. I hope people will continue to be pleasant and respectful playing IRL even if they run their mouths online.)
This is not about "reeee wimmin in muh tabletop ruining things". We didn't ruin a damn thing; this isn't something we even wanted. But the discussion about it is, unquestionably, going to bring the position of existing female community members under scrutiny, and that is without doubt going to make common 40K spaces less comfortable for us.
Someone will act the fucking fool on one of the big forums; the mods will smack them; and the trope that "the mods are protecting the wimmin rarrrr free speech millions must die" will be born, like the shittiest Chaos god imaginable.
And then it will be not-fun to go to these places, the same way it is not-fun to talk about video games online in a lot of places post-Gamergate if people know/figure out you are female.
I didn't want that crap in my comfy hobby of decades. I don't know anyone who did. And I do not want to receive reflected crap from GW's stupid and purposeless decision. I just want to build fucking scenery and paint small gribblies. We are not some kind of fifth column, and now there are going to be people who treat us as if we are, and I don't like that.
