Scott Peterson is my posterboy for the sociopath taunting the police. As he was being tailed by the police, he'd pull into empty parking lots and do wheelies and wave to them. Then he knew his phone was tapped (everybody did, obviously) and he would tell absurd lies to his girlfriend to fuck with the cops, and so on.

I think the root of it is the "duper's delight" that's been cited in this thread. These sociopaths always think they're much smarter than they are, and they take a glee in imagining they're outsmarting the (supposedly) dopey, hamfisted cops. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if it did happen to her, it wouldn't be the first time by any stretch. Its more common than the feds are willing to admit or talk about, for obvious reasons. Don't be so sure. Remember australia is a commonwealth country like canada. The commonwealth countries have a weird history of cooperating in doing that kind of thing with each other. Inter-agency favors or whatever you want to call it. Partly I suspect to take suspicion off of potential targets. eg: canada wants to investigate someone so they arrange for a UK or australian agency to do it so the target is less inclined to be suspicious, in return for similar cooperation later on.
