It’s free, though you may want to download it directly from their website because the Steam version doesn’t have all the cores (emulators). But more than that, I’ve shilled RetroBat a few times in the emulation thread and I will continue to do so here. A single unified pick-up-and-play interface to emulate anything, full of customization and display options, all in a controller-friendly interface with downloadable themes, using a combination of RetroArch and standalone emulators. You still need to get BIOS depending on the system, though.

Suddenly, this is making that weird Spider-Man PC update make more sense in retrospect.
Tldr, back in late 2022, Sony put out an update to the pc port of Spider-Man Remastered that gave you the option (emphasis on OPTION) to link your PSN to Steam. However, there was absolutely nothing forcing you to actually link your account (other than a single pop up the first time you boot up the game), so you could just as easily ignore it and play on. Sony also tried to make it slightly more enticing by giving you a small in-game bonus where you unlocked a suit and upgrade early. The pc port of the Miles spinoff game also had a similar linking prompt/reward.
Looking back, it's clear that the only reason Sony tried to push this is so that they could pre-emptively get people to link their accounts before they had a multiplayer-heavy game like Helldivers 2. Especially since The upcoming pc port of Ghost of Tsushima will have a forced PSN account linking (with the explanation being that it facilitates letting you play the multiplayer mode with ps4/5 players).

To me, the issue isn't that you need to link an account. It's the fact that the account linking is now mandatory and being forced on people via an update several months after the game released.

They literally showed everyone that the system isn't even necessary, that it only exists to track and control you and that 98% of matches are fine even with TKing enabled across the board. As long as that continues it is a threat to the narrative. Therefore it must be shut down.
This is why they use the banner of safety-ism to justify their incursion while double dipping your data and piping it through Virginia, spilling it along the way.
Oh and I'm sure inflating the user metrics for their clueless investors is in there somewhere too.

I bought a ps3 the day it was released, hard to believe that was what, 15 years ago? I've seen maybe 2 or 3 games in that 15 or so years that made me consider buying a console again, none of them were playstation exclusive.

The world revolves around them, and so we really reap what they want us to pander to. It is like an inescapable poison that everyone is aware and hates at the same time. But yes, this requirement didn't seem like a big deal until I looked deeper into it. It's not an "inconvenience," thing. It's a vindictive action which legitimately affects people now and most likely will in the future.

Eh, I understand the appeal of a unified interface for your retro games, but given the track record of modern software and even emulator developers forcing updates, I don't want them to suddenly decide that backups of my physical games aren't "legitimate" enough and not work on updated versions of emulators anymore. Like the Developers of PCSX2 did with more recent builds. With more discordnigger moralfaggotry popping up around the PS2 bios of all things. Meanwhile Sony openly hosts PS3 firmware on their official playstation website that anyone can access at any time.

It's a sad day when i realize that people are not buying consoles anymore for, you know, playing games on them. Or rather just Playstations, the Switch is doing fine as a pure gaming console from what i can tell from the people i know that own one. The only person i know that owns a PS5 is playing a fuckton more on his kid's Switch than on Snoy's garbage machine.
I won't even go into that Helldivers 2 retardation, it's just mindboggling. I hope it results in big time Steam refunds, Lord knows that Sony deserves every bad thing happening to them. @Mr.Miyagi already put it best re: security, what a fucking joke to use this much of a sore spot as an excuse for why PC users need to get a PSN account if they want to continue playing.
