I remember Inscryption did something similar where you'd basically be presented an (almost) unwinnable situation in a later boss fight if you got there on your very first run. Bit shitty, but I could understand the incentive to not let people jump through the whole game in one go if the main idea is repeated runs and variety. A malus is probably better than a wall, but the best solution would just be having the game's complexity/difficulty be high enough that only the pros would smash through it right from the start.read the game will actively fuck with you for progressing to far to quickly.
