Barely. As in it broke even with some minor surplus before the OGL incident and burning money on IOT bullshit rather than just using another VTT fucked them. Magic was their moneymaker until they card spammed it to death, and that's actually why they keep trying to shove MTG down your throat with IP spam now.
They still considered Wizards as a whole autistic trash and shoved the dregs towards it even back then.
You're right and I should have clarified that in my summary above: WotC isn't just D&D and D&D is the small money in that equation.
Also the main thing that got the Hasbro activist guy all up in arms wasn't so much the raw dollars that WotC's products were pulling it, it was the margins.

MTG is still the big earner in WotC , but they were already fucking it up before the OGL hit. MTG fucked up their big anniversary set with over printing, and they sicced the goddamn pinkertons on some small time magic youtuber who got a set early due to their own fuck up. (and probably several other things I'm forgetting/unaware of because I've known the touch of a woman)
OGL fuckery gave a bunch of disguntled Cardspergs a banner to rally behind to actually manifest their displeasure (IF only temporarily, before they cucked back under and came crawling and oinking back like good paypiggies.) instead of the usual of impotently grogging to the cashier as they buy everything.
