Slowbeef seems like a relatively normal family-man nerd compared to the freaks and mother fuckers playing games for the internet in this gender queer era of video games. And his wife was pretty based. She thinks Undertale is really shitty.

That stream he did showing Undertale to his wife who had no context for RPGs and her just shitting on it while the chat cried is one of the funniest things slowbeef ever did.

Retsupurae would have gone nowhere without slowbeef running the show and despite his (many) missteps, I have never come to dislike him.

My feelings exactly. Also, slowbeef is legitimately funny when he’s shitting on people. I just think he’s stopped doing it as much, but slowbeef could whip out some killer burns on people back in the day.

Edit: to put it one way, slowbeef was one of the few people taxi and vollipop wouldn’t make fun of, even before he became mod. I, on the other hand, got shit on MANY times.

I wasn't directly involved in this, but I think that LP Forum was created because during the early days of SA LPs circa 2007-2008, a lot of goons absolutely hated the concept of Let's Plays and didn't want them to have a place on the site at all. It was sort of the mirror image of how the early SA Let's Players had all kinds of autistic rules and regulations they demanded people follow if they dared talk over a video game; other goons had an autistic revulsion to people talking over video games altogether. @proteus4994 probably knows the specifics, if he hasn't already detailed it before.

It wasn’t so much that people hated them, they just didn’t want them spamming up the Games forum. Because god knows purists don’t want anything to get in the way of the exciting “Megathread Central“ format of the Games forum.

Slowbeef was always funny, this does sound like revisionism. Even Ironicus who's super soy now is very witty and clever when he talks, its his politisperging that makes him annoying. The only irredeemable one is Void, she always ruined anything she was in you can tell she has no original thoughts and just wants to fit in.

I honestly really like Voidburger's content, and Bob, for that matter. I'm a fellow Silent Hill fan, and having been a female in traditionally "nerdy" spaces before, I can relate to VB in some ways.

My thing is I feel like both of them can be way too preachy about Current Year Issues, and can come across as very holier-than-thou. (See: Bob's recent video about the indie game dev caught liking problematic tweets; while some of the stuff the dude liked was genuinely vile, I felt Bob came across as trying to morally grandstand to the dude.)

I also wish VB would just own her shit and admit she used to have an edgy sense of humor, but has since changed her ways. (Example: the one SH LP she made where she updated the video description to self-flagellate about saying one of the characters was acting like a "cunt.") Instead she's always used the excuse that SA was a boy's club and she was just trying to fit in. Again, I've been there before, I get it, but just own up to it.

Bob wasn't an LPer he was a video editor for something...? But he would always insert himself into things.

The reason I'm aware of him is because some people got together and made a long video essay about Silent Hill long before long video essays were really a thing:

This series was a review/retrospective of the whole series and was built upon as new ones came out but it also challenged things that were on the fan wiki which was filled with fan-fic that the mods wouldn't allow to be edited.

Void and Bob were part of the Silent Hill community and were friends with said mods and became the most vocal well known voices seething about it. I just remember it being weird seeing Void being apart of the whole thing because she just happened to be annoying in 2 of the niche interests I had.

Posting this here in the event that it might ring a few bells.
Around the very late 2000s and some time afterwards, there was one place called the "Let's Play Forum" (Not to be confused with "Let's Play Zone," which has been mentioned several times before in this thread) that was run by goons who got chased out of SA for being too smug and unlikable for their already-dreadful standards.

I'm a former member of Let's Play Forum. I'm happy to recount whatever history the thread here is interested in.

However, honestly, the place was pretty typical for a forum community, and it never had the influence that Something Awful's Let's Play subforum had. The LPF story is more that of a niche group that existed at an interesting point in time, but doesn't have a lot of relevance unless you like obscure Internet history.

First of all, Grawl wasn't chased out of SA or LP. He was making LPs over the course of the forum's lifespan. He didn't do a huge amount outside of actually hosting the place, so running the forum itself fell to a few others who were active. LPF was not a cult of personality for Grawl.

The forum's culture did try to emulate SA though. While it had a decently active Off Topic section it was still a good place for LPs outside of SA. It aimed to be better than the standard that YouTube was putting out. Still though, many 2008 Retsupurae and ChipCheezum RPs riffed over videos made by members of LPF.

There was sort of an initiation joining LPF, but not really to the point of hazing IMO. Like every forum it had an Introduction board, but in order to post LPs you needed it to pass review from the community. It was mostly a quality and feedback thing but things would get cliquey and trolly sometimes though that usually happened outside the dedicated LP areas.

Most of the community weren't goons, but would eventually become goons. We looked up to SA.

That might seem stupid now to everyone here but SA was still good back at that time, if you can believe it. I mean, Proteus was still posting there even when he stopped making LPs because the forum got too big.


Sidenote about Something Awful LP, the shitlib stuff started infecting that place in earnest around late 2013 about a year after the Dangan Ronpa Tumblr invasion. Before that our first troonout was DazzlingAddar / Dazzling Anime / Maple McKenzie between late 2011 and early 2012 who I see got mentioned in the thread earlier for that fetish VTuber avatar.

The only other shitlib echoes really came from Zorak, the mod of ADTRW (anime subforum), who posted in LP occasionally. He exhibited typical SA mod behavior there.

Returning to LPF, Schildkrote was responsible for trolling the forum soon after it opened. However, LPF didn't just ban him. Instead, after arguing a bit, it was Schildkrote who encouraged LPF to implement quality standards on the forum. That made the content everyone posted much better and those ideas stuck until the end. I don't think Grawl had much opposition to Schildkrote.

Honestly, I can't think of anyone who disowned Grawl. LPF died because the staff, not including Grawl, were resistant to change that the rest of the community wanted. Everyone just left for SA in the end and had a good time there instead.

The forum had more going on but that's just the stuff relevant to what people here brought up. I can talk more about SALP history too if anyone cares.

If I'm not mistaken Chip has referred to himself as a game dev despite being a video editor ("senior video artist" is Remedy's fluffed up job title for this), which is an ongoing trend in the industry with support staff like community managers and guys like Chip who are indignant they aren't held in the same regard as the designers and programmers. Actual devs have griped about this.
