It's pretty fucking harrowing.

This tracks extremely well with the cult-y bullshit of the 60s-70s New Ager excuses for molesting children. The urges come first; the excuses are only that, hung on a flimsy framework of "the New World cometh."

Breen deserved to die in prison, and anyone coming at Moira Greyland for her beliefs should be skinned.

I think a lot of people would have to reconsider their inherently positive views on homosexuality if Moira's story was more well known. Because in it we don't just see the boogeyman of a depraved rapist. Instead we see the far worse reality of 'queer thought' being taken to it's logical conclusion, and how many people it hurt.

She lived that hell. She had the bravery to stand up to it, and to further go against the most prevailing myth of the modern age to say what she thinks is right. She is a true rebel, and I respect her immensely.

Sometimes it feels like this is beginning to play out as the backlash to the trans lunacy gathers steam. It's been less than a decade since gay marriage became the law of the land and we're already putting male sex fiends in women's prisons and feeding body-destroying hormones to children. It's really difficult not to see what's happening now as a logical progression, which may be why otherwise intelligent people defend the trans stuff so adamantly: admit the trannies are loons and creeps, and you have to start reconsidering how accurate the Neighborhood Friendly Gay concept really is.

Whether you agree with Moira or not she earned that right by what she went through. How anyone can see the hippy hogwash that is Mists of Avalon and how those real beliefs hurt a woman and go "oh but muh homophobia" is beyond me.
Sounds like the "bothsidesism" term shitlibs love using when they wanna dismiss any idea contrary to their own.

Moira isn't a homo"phobe", because a phobia is an irrational fear. Her fear of fags is 200% rational and justified.

It's called forced teaming, and homosexuals hate it too. Bleeding heart liberals think trannies are just turbo-gays who wear their drag costume full time, and trannies want to keep it that way so they can practice their degeneracy behind a human shield of gays.

Yeah, I've seen that phenomenon. I know a gay gym bro who loathes the trannies. "I don't want to be a woman, I just like dudes." You'd think with so many people despising them there'd be more pushback, but the world is crazy.

Network effects make them think they're a minority, while the media assures them that troons are only opposed by a regressive cadre of ontologically evil phobes, who should be ostracised and murdered. They don't want to be ostracised and lose literally everything, so they keep quiet.

but there's plenty that argue the slippery slope will reverse.

It's not just "teaming" it's the flaw in all revolutions who do not have a goal or stop gap measure to end the ride. So they get stuck in a cycle which even communists pointed out "the revolution must never stop otherwise it will become fascist."

Even if the trans thing gets under control there's still backlash brewing over "bake the cake, bigot" and similar merited impossibilities because gays couldn't resist being drama queens and let things lie.

That backlash is earned. Former moderates like me were sold on "we just want to get married". If I had known what I know now about the gay community I never would have fallen for it. Because it was a deception, and spiteful things like "Bake the cake, bigot" show that.

>prediction: killing someone in VR will psychologically break them or even make them die IRL
>reality: killing someone in VR just makes them call you a nigger
Ehhhh, given the whining about kills nowadays, can you really say it doesn't psychologically break them? People have vapors over stickers on pixel guns , ffs.

The Adaptation Tango

May 24, 2024

A few years back, Neil Gaiman and I did a joint event in New York City, when we were both in town.

It was a lot of fun, as events with Neil always are. We told some funny stories, talked about books and comics, about SANDMAN and WILD CARDS and days at cons… and touched on some serious topics too.

I would like to upload a video of the event if I could, but I am not sure one exists. If anyone was recording us, I have never seen the tape. But VARIETY had the best report of the session.

https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/ge...ollywood-changing-source-material-1235416651/

That was all back in 2022, but very little has changed since then. If anything, things have gotten worse. Everywhere you look, there are more screenwriters and producers eager to take great stories and “make them their own.” It does not seem to matter whether the source material was written by Stan Lee, Charles Dickens, Ian Fleming, Roald Dahl, Ursula K. Le Guin, J.R.R. Tolkien, Mark Twain, Raymond Chandler, Jane Austen, or… well, anyone. No matter how major a writer it is, no matter how great the book, there always seems to be someone on hand who thinks he can do better, eager to take the story and “improve” on it. “The book is the book, the film is the film,” they will tell you, as if they were saying something profound. Then they make the story their own.

They never make it better, though. Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, they make it worse.

Once in a while, though, we do get a really good adaptation of a really good book, and when that happens , it deserves applause.

I can came across one of those instances recently, when I binged the new FX version of SHOGUN.

Must confess, I was dubious when I first heard they were making another version of the Clavell novel. It has been a long time, a long long LONG time, but I read the book when it first came out in the late 70s and was mightily impressed. (I really need to give it a reread one of these days, but there are so many books, so little time). And the 1980 miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain as the Anjin was a landmark of long form television, right up with with ROOTS; why do it over again, when that version was so good?

I am glad they did, though. The new SHOGUN is superb. Better than Chamberlain’s version, you ask? Hmmm, I don’t know. I have not watched the 1980 miniseries since, well, 1980. That one was great too. The fascinating thing is that while the old and new versions have some significant differences — the subtitles that make the Japanese dialogue intelligible to English speaking viewers being the biggest — they are both faithful to the Clavell novel in their own way. I think the author would have been pleased. Both old and new screenwriters did honor to the source material, and gave us terrific adaptations, resisting the impulse to “make it their own.”

But don’t take my word for it. Watch it yourself.

Acting, directing, set design, costume… it’s all splendid here. Along with the writing.

And if SHOGUN is a big enough hit, maybe the same team will adapt some of Clavell’s other novels.

Current Mood: thoughtful

This fat faggot had a big sook earlier in the year about the negativity in fandoms and dismissing the reasons for the level of vitriol, and he's now saying the same thing as the people he dismissed. Finish the Dunk and Egg stories you old cunt.
They're fun little short stories and I love the audiobooks, but of course he can't finish them because he's a lazy goon who is terrified that he'll describe Bloodraven an inch taller in one story than another, and Preston Jacobs/Alt Shift X/The Dragon Demands/Lucifer Means Lightbringer will make a "BLOODRAVEN IMPOSTOR!??!?!?!" 5 part video.

Whoever the ball washer that was tasked with or chose to clean up Samuel R. Delany's wiki entry fucked up. The ball washer forgot that Delany's wiki entry is written in 22 other languages aside from english. One also doesn't need to be able to read 22 other languages, one just has to get the browser to translate it.

Which leads to a question, why did the ball washer remove all the feminism bullshit that Delany's was involved in? The section on the Khatru Symposium is removed in the english version and all it's about is female SF writers and the SF field was male dominated in 1970's. It seems like a weird thing for a progressive asshole to remove.

I didn't know GRR Fatfuck was stupid in addition to being a coomer. The REASON book adaptations get fucked up isn't because "wahhh stolen valour", it's that hollywood hopes to make every film marketable to everyone. The story gets changed with the intention of making it accessible to the entire paying customer base, including George Carlin's 50%. I agree that this isn't a good thing, but it's a matter of businessmen trying to squeeze cash out of retards, not some sort of artistic battle. "The book is the book, the film is the film" because of profit.

Yes, film adaptations are often worse because a very good book is appealing to readers of that genre. Adapting it to be genre-less/pan-profitable takes away the character of the novel that made it good in the first place. He's right about film adaptations being generally shit, but embarassingly wrong to think it's some sort of personal attack on the author.
