There are handicap spots in front of every business in the USA (that has parking) and yet you don’t have very many people at all intentionally disabling themselves.

This goes into a bigger rant I have. I hate contrarian youtube, they don't have a point they just want to go against the grain for the sake of it.
They've been popping up even though I've never watched a single video like them. At least you can tell what it is by the thumbnail. It's always a gen z kid looking perplexed with one or two vids screenshotted to show what the topic is, and title is something like "(insert thing here) is out of pocket/problematic/wild/out of hand".

Do these people have any original thoughts at all? Jason tweets about how great Chinese EVs are and they instantly switch from "all cars are bad, EVs don't solve the problems of car dependency" to "look at how awesome and amazing this car is". Notice that OP has a "Not Just Bikes" flair and that the picture in the post is the exact same one that you shared.

If Liveleak videos have taught me anything, those Chinese EVs will explode randomly, if you get hit as a pedestrian you're more likely to be run over again as no one is going to risk letting you live and sue, infrastructure is literally made of cardboard, and "car culture" is just as bad over there anyway, that is, if you can afford a car, get it.

Where I am they have a "green vehicle" parking implemented. Though most of those people are just people who already own a Tesla or Prius because of gas prices and parking there is just a plus to them.

China's "car culture" if you can call it that works somewhat differently than America, as it's more materialism focused. Like in America you'll get guys interested in all types of cars cheap, expensive, weird or old. In China its more like you either have shitty cars, average cars and expensive cars. It's way more materialistic than in the west where people will see an odd shitbox Datsun from the 80s and be like "oh cool I remember those". In China your car is more of a reflection of who you are in society.

In China you are very much defined by what you drive and how you present yourself socially. Ironically they really like western brands like Land Rover and BMW which evoke a sense of prestige over their domestically made cars.

This somewhat exists in the USA but it's usually within a particular career group. So if you're a lawyer driving a shitty 80s Datsun you're either a fucking failure or you're the managing partner at a multi-million dollar firm.

You see this the most in realtors and salespeople jobs, where they shit on each other indefinitely over car / house choice.

Sounds like the chinks have this society-wide. (The US may have had something like this for awhile, based on some feelings I get from old media, but the fucking minivan destroyed that, because they're ALL shitboxes and they're mandatory; you get issued a minivan with your third kid automatically. If someone sees you driving a minivan they just assume you have to pick up the kids or have the kids this week.)

Coincidentally I feel like the pickup truck has sort of bridged this gap between classes where you sometimes can't quite tell (at least down south) who is rich or poor driving a truck. You can sort of tell based on the year and trim package, but in general it brings a sort of common factor among people.

For chinsects it's important to have a large car for prestige, but you can't have a better model than your boss because it'd make them look bad, so what the western premium brands do is make weird lengthened versions of their lower end models. Ever wanted a long wheelbase version of a bog standard BMW 3 series?

The real issue is that anyone that complains about "car culture" does not understand it in the least. It's not about having a car anymore, it's also what your personality and needs are. Urbanists are vaguely aware of this, they like to play armchair psychologist on pickup truck drivers and SUV drivers (wrong on most accounts, but whatever) but you see it everywhere--a car can tell you about a person. There's "black person cars" and "NPC cars" and "working class Mexican cars".

I contend that roads are the truly egalitarian form of transportation. All destinations are accessible, they are open 24/7, and everyone--rich and poor, black and white, liberal and conservative--share the same space.

I actually was at one of these recently, with a cyber truck parked next to some super car I’d need five years in duolingo to even ask the price next to an unrestored car from the 50s (complete rust bucket) and a original 90s Volvo wagon. All were on display, and the owners were having fun talking.

And who knows? It’s America - the owner of the all original 90s Volvo may have been the richest of all. You just really can’t tell from appearances and show here.

I never got why Italian Americans liked Cadillac so much until it was explained to me one time. When poor Italian American immigrants came to America and saw a Cadillac on the road it meant that someone important was passing by. Sometimes the only time someone would get to ride in one was in the back of a Cadillac hearse when they died. That's why when you could afford one it was like a point of pride that you finally made it.

That's the sort of 21st century marvel that still impresses me about America is that owning a vehicle has been made assessable to so many people.
 
Remember, however much you subsidize cities, it's never enough. They'll insist that the cities subsidize the suburbs (which is objectively wrong) and will invent new reasons to punish you when those run out ("externalities").

The last job I did in Philadelphia the job site was robbed about 6 times I would constantly find used panties and crack needles all over the job site on Monday I had to shoot out a bunch of homeless bums off the site I said to trace out a crackhead from the dumpster who was trying to find copper simply due to the fact that if he gets hurt we're financially liable

I generally hate dumpster divers not because I particularly care that they take stuff that we're throwing out that they're just extremely presumptuous about just going into the dumpster

Yeah, funny you should mention "cooked", you sometimes hear about Tesla batteries exploding, the last thing I want is a Chinese car made of explodium that will be an electric fire that firefighters can't easily put out, nor rescue me because the "jaws of life" are built for standard-weight, standard-frame cars.

As for Jason, the whole idea of hating cars involves "muh transit alternatives" and "muh streets for kids", and electric cars don't really do a lot in those instances.

When I first started seeing stories about how the Biden administration was going to put a huge-ass tariff on these super cheap Chinese cars, I remember thinking "oh wow, that's kinda bullshit, they should be allowed to sell them here". I can see the value of a cheap electric car, there's no reason they have to be gay and filled with touchscreens and self-driving bullshit, those are just the only ones anyone builds here. Now that I'm seeing every lefty in existence jump on this with both feet, I'm not so sure anymore.

I noticed streetcraft on Instagram pushing the same bad city planning ideas straight from video games. Redesigning bad intersections by carte blanche and unlimited budget.
Anytime road construction of any kind blocks a bike lane or a sidewalk(even though it's usually for the public's safety even if it appears arbitrary), at least one member of fuckcars is guaranteed to snap a photo and make a seething post about it. These people's conception of city planning comes entirely from video games.

They being poor communists have no concept of property rights, being that they have none. So the idea the government can't just take your land to redo railroad crossings or intersections to make them safer, just doesn't exist. The idea that most traffic projects can take 5 to 10 years of planning before budgeting concerns are addressed, doesn't cross their minds because they've never asked any real questions.

The best example is every low height bridge crossing that gets hit every other month. The railroad isn't going to spend 100 million dollars to redo the track going back 10s of miles to increase the road space underneath. The county/city isn't going to spend 10 million to dig out the crossing and redo the bridge because there is either infrastructure underneath or the cost will never he worth the expense economically.

As obnoxious as these people can be, they’re absolutely correct about Houston being a fugly, unsafe, poorly maintained, corrupt, hyper-stressful and disgusting shithole. It really is a monument to man’s arrogance. There’s a reason the rest of Texas — even the most hardened suburbanite F150 driver — despises it. I will never live there again.
