They may have been waiting for nick to leave the house to avoid an armed standoff. MN law seems to say they have 10 days to execute the warrant.
They do not have to serve nick with with the warrant to enter.

If there was a life-threatening emergency then they would have just gotten a no-knock warrant.
For a standard warrant they need to knock loudly.
Announce they are cops.
Announce that they have a warrant. And then give who ever is there a reasonable amount of time to get to the door and open it. No one has to let them in. They aren't going to sit on the stoop and argue with a junky while another one is busy flushing the drugs. They have a warrant. They are going in. The only thing the person inside has a choice in at that point is whether they want to save their door jam or not.

I understand the point your trying to make but lets think about the big picture here. If he is going to sit there and argue about how the warrant was executed in front of a judge then he is already fucking up. It should never get that far. He is a first time offender with kids and a family. His only winning move is to plead out to something that gets him no jail time and get in to a drug program. Since he wasn't actually using the guns for gangster stuff then I am sure the DA will be fine using the gun charges as leverage to score and easy W on a plea deal. Nick trying to fuck around and take the case to trial means he could end up with real jail time. Ya sure he could try and get it tossed on some technicality.
