I totally believe that the cops waited for Nick to leave the house before executing said warrant and I don't believe it was for safety. They probably wanted to catch him driving impaired with the kid and to attack the weak link (Kayla) without her lawyer husband.

Waiting for Nick to leave the house was better both in terms of safety and in terms of minimizing the risk of evidence being destroyed. It clearly was effective, since no one got shot and none of the drugs got flushed. Also, how they chose to execute the search warrant won't really matter, as long as the underlying justification for the search warrant was valid.

I think it is related to the increased isolation in society thanks to the internet.

Prior to this, people were forced to go and do things in real life to maintain or make friendships. With occasional isolated weirdos using Ham Radio or something.
