It could just be that I grew up with and know plenty of fucked up homes with kids who were put in the system, and I get wanting to "support Nick," but that support should come with tough love. I'm not gonna go all hard right-wing talking points, but as the sole provider and head of household, he was responsible for everything in his house; he's responsible for his wife, his kids, and everything else; Joe. His wife didn't work, at most she taught (music, I think) at their school pod, and children are children, the older ones still need to be told not to do shit and younger ones are semi-helpless depending on what's going on in their life; Kurt. It may just be seeing enough shit growing up, that I have a fucking axe to grind against druggie parents and I'll admit that, but if you want me to "support Nick," okay... I'm up for water-boarding him, to where his body is shaking not from withdrawls, but from fear of drowning. To where he avoids liquor stores and black dudes hanging out on Martin Luther King Blvd at 2AM, because he'll associate that shit with having a rag shoved in his mouth and have water poured over his head. That's the fucking support I'm willing to give.

Because they control the racket like cops in IA or unions. When you get to control what gets you kicked out you have incredible amounts of power. It took decades just to get teachers accused of sexual shit with students to be pushed out of schools instead of just sitting in the teachers lounge and making their pay. It's why unions get a bad rep besides being mob controlled for decades.

Obviously at this point they're both complicit in the neglect and possible abuse of the kids. However, I don't get the feeling from Kayla that she is a manipulative mastermind, and I do think Nick initiated the downward spiral. I think he already had narc tendencies, and the online attention he got as Epic Lawyer Man made him feel like a celebrity... then falling in with people like Dick. combined with probably a midlife crisis, he got it into his head that in order to sustain the cool persona he wanted for himself, he needed to have a lifestyle based on impulsive retardation like sex and substance abuse. From there he pretty clearly began to resent his family, especially his kids, and had this attitude toward them as peers to bully rather than kids he was responsible for caring about.

I don't think Kayla is particularly smart nor do I get the impression that she wears the pants, so I'm guessing as he began to stop being the leader/man of the house she probably went full retard too. It's not cool or okay, and if she was a good mother she would've gotten her kids away from him. I don't know how feasible that is since apparently their arrangement was that she's a stay at home mom. No idea what her degree is in but she must have went to college since they met there.

Nick's situation is a cautionary tale to me that if you want to do the trad game and have your wife be entirely dependent on you to provide, you are a piece of shit if you decide 20 years later that it's "not fun" to be the man of the house and disappoint your kids by becoming a drunk that fights with people on the internet all day. Nobody is a victim in this situation, in any case, except the children.
