I think that under the circumstances even Nick's most ardent supporters, who sincerely believe in his fight for the constitutional right to accuse other people of raping children, without evidence, would understand Nick cutting the Monty complication out of his life. That way Nick can focus on the much more important "big government conspiracy" which is apparently being waged against him.
It really is the perfect time to do it though, no one who still likes him will blame him for ducking out of the defamation case and those that hate him will mock him for a while but also recognize that Nick finally made a sane decision in all of this.
