My theory at Nick's angle is that he is delusional enough to think he can beat the charges against him and go back to how things were as if nothing happened. He CANNOT say he made a mistake or admit he "needs help / rehab / therapy" because that would be admitting fault to his alleged crimes, hence his current stance of "things aren't what they seem" and "people don't have the whole picture".
His flippant first response on locals told the tale of how it was going to go. Even in the "I have a lot of going on in my life and will be stepping back" post he had to let everyone know IT'S NAWT TROOO!!! Nick's ego is larger than his nose.
