Honestly, while its unlikely, I cant help but think of that part from cruelty squad where people are intentionally sent to their death as a sacrifice to demons.
He has the opportunity to do the funniest thing possible.
it would be a god tier troll to intentionally ram into a sharp rock just to solidify the companies bad rep. Doubt a millionaire would, but it would be funny

ohio ceo 💀

On a more serious note, if I had to play devil's advocate, the only possible thought process I can come up with is "they tested it, now they know its limits" (morbid as it may be). Or maybe he just wants to commit suicide and make national news while doing so (not with a bang, but with a fwoop).
I think in general the amount of information that we've now heard about the Oceangate sub seems to indicate it was by no means top of the line.

We know personal subs can make it down there, because James Cameron did it several times [mostly in 2001 and later in 2016, 33 dives overall] and made two separate documentaries with high end equipment.

Oceangate was just deciding to run the Daytona 500 in a clapped out Nissan Altima.

If this new billionaire commissioned Triton subs for this project he'll probably succeed. Not to shill too much but afaik this is one of the few companies which has previous design experience with manned ultra deep submersibles. One of the OG billionaire divers Victor Vescovo also has a sub made by them, with a spherical hull made of thick titanium which he uses to go to all the deepest parts of the ocean as a billionaire prestige project. So if you have the cash and access to an experienced design team I think the chance of success is greater then the jerry rigged carbon fire sewage line sub.

It’s a single person submersible which is a proven concept. So while dangerous, there are designs and vessels available to someone with unlimited money. I’m sure he’ll be fine. The biggest obstacle in deep sea exploration is money, which isn’t an issue for him.

What would be genuinely interesting is if someone did a carbon fibre vessel again, but didn’t cheap out in the fibre laying process like Oceangate did and fixed various other others.

Why are all these billionaires going down to where the Titanic sank in the first place, despite the apparent great personal peril involved?

There must be treasure down there.
At this point it's bragging rights. Going to space is heavily regulated and a complex hurdle, but they can use their money to get a sub to get to the Titanic easily.

I'd guess that when money and wealth for a billionaire loses all value, these are some of the only ways those poor sods can still enjoy anything in life.

As Null pointed out at the time, these things generally don't have windows.

You are getting the same experience looking at these pixels as you are in that submarine.

They're selling this,

and delivering this,

and they're so committed to selling this Deathcocoon scam to rich people that they're willing to risk their own lives. Based I guess?

All's I know is, you ain't getting me to take my shoes off and squat on the rubber floor of no Deathcocoon even if there is a bus full of orphans trapped at the bottom of the sea floor ah hell naw fuck you rich niggas.

But Uncle Scrooge... shouldn't we commission Triton Labs, who have experience in crafting deep sea submersibles, and not Gyro Gearloose, who wants to do it for cheap?

No, you're 100% right. Test pilots often have to give their lives to discover the functional limits of machines like this Budget Deathcocoon. Why, they would be wasting that precious data collected on the initial voyage where all those rich retards died. I bet you money they made that argument when greenlighting this follow-up voyage.

James Cameron went down the Mariana Trench, much deeper than titanic’s depth. E we 100% have safe, tested, and proven submersible design. But none of them are made from more than one contiguous metal casing and none use carbon fiber. Stockton Rush looked at the submersible industry and thought to himself “what if we fucked with the design and made it mostly carbon fiber??” This is why the moron died, not because of submersible depth.
