I think in general the amount of information that we've now heard about the Oceangate sub seems to indicate it was by no means top of the line.

We know personal subs can make it down there, because James Cameron did it several times [mostly in 2001 and later in 2016, 33 dives overall] and made two separate documentaries with high end equipment.

Oceangate was just deciding to run the Daytona 500 in a clapped out Nissan Altima.

I am not a big believer in the supernatural, but my line of superstition begins at the beach. The ocean is not our world, and the deeper we go, the less likely we are to come back.

If this new billionaire commissioned Triton subs for this project he'll probably succeed. Not to shill too much but afaik this is one of the few companies which has previous design experience with manned ultra deep submersibles. One of the OG billionaire divers Victor Vescovo also has a sub made by them, with a spherical hull made of thick titanium which he uses to go to all the deepest parts of the ocean as a billionaire prestige project. So if you have the cash and access to an experienced design team I think the chance of success is greater then the jerry rigged carbon fire sewage line sub.

No, you're 100% right. Test pilots often have to give their lives to discover the functional limits of machines like this Budget Deathcocoon. But none of them are made from more than one contiguous metal casing and none use carbon fiber. Stockton Rush looked at the submersible industry and thought to himself “what if we fucked with the design and made it mostly carbon fiber??” This is why the moron died, not because of submersible depth.
