Most likely. Junkies don't really have friends, they just have useful people. Those relationships will change on a dime as people become more or less convenient for getting their next fix. Might already be in the works for Nick as the free ride he represents comes to a sudden end.

Another element to "why can't a 16 year old parent 4 children" is that multiple junkies also lived in the house and I'm not sure they all went to all the same activities at the same time. So you might have hours where it's only the younger kids, for example. A 16 year old is going to be in different church/homeschool groups than a 6 year old.

I can also totally see the house having rules such as "Don't run the laundry machine while daddy is streaming/sleeping, it's too loud" or being too afraid to go into certain rooms or leave your bedroom when they're having a fight or strung out.

You might be too afraid to leave your bedroom all night and into the morning, hearing them going on a coke binge. Then at 8oclock it's "Get in the car right fucking now" without any breakfast, shower, change of clothes, no lunch packed.

Yes you might say "well I know very independent 16 year olds" but I'll remind you again that Nick literally had a gun under his bed and was coked out, sleeping with multiple other people in that bed too. Do you really expect a boy to go confront his father like that? To go knock on his door and ask to go to the grocery store? Nick was apparently the type to hit himself in fights. I cannot imagine the blow-ups of "do you think I don't love you?" and other narcisistic threats if his son made some big confrontation.

Not to mention the likilihood of depression or anxiety in any number of the children.

These are also not underclass kids living in underclass communities where learning how to run a household at 13, cover for whatever crime your parents are engaged in, and suffering through their deranged behaviour is just a rite of passage everyone goes through. These are upper middle class kids in a small, tight-knit community who went to Church every Sunday. The sort of kids who got a nanny to run their lives for them so they can focus on school and, y'know, just being kids as long as possible. You can't blame them for falling apart and not being able to deal with things when their parents speedran the entire family into the white trash lifestyle in the course of just a few years. They've never had any context or life experience to be remotely capable of handling the situation themselves.

Kids tend to think they are guilty for shit their parents do or fail to do all the time. Especially if they ever hear one or both parents mention children in a fight or as an excuse. Once my ex snapped in public and started a fight with a random person who pushed him in a crowd (somewhat accidentally because it was crowded but he was drunk as well) while he held our child and said something to the guy along the lines "wtf idiot don't you see kid be careful", I just felt a blade went through my heart instantly and thought you fucking absolute idiot they think it's their fault.
