Nick's community could see something was wrong, and it would appear that the church tried intervening without getting the police involved, but got pushed back. Nick has forfeited the right to complain about "muh big bad gubmint", but only because he's too coked up to even acknowledge he's done anything wrong.

Not completely sure about evangelical lutherns, which is where they attended. But many Protestant Church's have some concept of "Church discipline" where problematic members can be brought before the church. Other members (in good standing) of the church can then vote on the punishment, which can include banishment from the premises...

It rarely gets to this points, as most people under this scrutiny leave before it gets to that level because the entire process is embarrassing for them. However, Rackets with his self diagnosed, childish case of ODD might just push it.
