The only morally superior thing he could have done would have been to stay just to make sure Nick’s kids were properly fed, or told the police immediately about the drug use and neglect. Although if he stayed he would eventually get arrested and potentially lose custody of his own kids. He brought awareness to their plight after the fact so that people like Nick, JuJu, Vito, and EVS can’t just dismiss their trauma and gaslight people in to thinking it was no big deal like they are doing currently. He made the choice to walk away because he had something to lose, April chose not to because she didn’t. If he didn’t tell anyone what happened all we would have now is Nick’s side of the story and police reports. Regardless of his character flaws he was able to get a more complete version of the story out. He is not responsible for the wellbeing of Nick’s kids at the expense of his own. He walked away from his wife and hedonistic pleasure to get out of a dysfunctional situation, it’s just a shame he couldn’t do the same for Nick’s kids.
