Most will be predisposed to their brain becoming obsessed with that dopamine high. The psychological aspect becomes important because most people even with that predilection would recognise their behaviour is causing them problems and stop. Unless of course you have terrible trauma, or anxiety, or some other issue that dopamine helps you escape from. It's why people who never previously had issues can develop PTSD and become hopelessly addicted.

With regards to Nick, it's not like he's been raped, seen his best friend get blown up, or really had any bad luck. I think he turned 40, was bored on his life, his wife, and was depressed. He's too proud to admit it and ask for help, so he downs some whiskey and does some beano... Many such cases.

At this point, he is going to have to go completely sober I think. He's crossed the Rubicon of being able to control his drinking.

This right here is what always made me MATI about Nick. I've known quite a lot of people with substance issues and every single one of them turned to drugs when they were at their lowest, either trying to cope with childhood abuse, being involved in paramilitaries/organised crime, or from trying them way too young to have the self control to stop.

Nick on the other hand went out of his way to fuck up his life and the lives of his family for no reason other than he was fucking bored. Imagine being his kid and upon reachign adulthood you have to reconcile that rather than your da doing this to you because he came back with PTSD from Kabul, or because he remembered repressed memories of his uncle touching him, he did it because sitting on his arse and reacting to trials was 'too stressful' for him.

Nick is far more of a subhuman than any junkie you see shooting it under a bridge, cause if you were to ask them how they got there they'd more than likely have something genuinely tragic as a reason. As for Rackets, he was just bored, and of course we 'wouldn't understand'.

His addiction was born from a mid life crisis. I have a feeling though that Kayla was the catalyst and not an innocent woman dragged into drugs by her husband.
