I can't speak too accurately on the American state of things, but yes. Not only will you be paying out the ass for the degree, it will take up an enormous amount of time (5+ years) during which you will not be able to work full-time. It's a wonder anyone even bothers.

You could try the alternate path of becoming a clinical psychologist instead (you won't be able to prescribe medication, but otherwise you're just as qualified), but all that really saves you is a bit of effort due to course requirements will likely be a bit lesser - still takes about the same amount of time assuming the US is like Australia in it being a Masters program.

Just a note, psychiatry generally pays far below other medical practices (at least in the USA) which is why there is such a shortage.

The people that need the psychiatric help the most are usually on Medicaid. In the USA most private insurance won’t cover anything beyond very basic psychiatric care and you’re fucked if you need inpatient treatment. Being mentally ill enough to need regular treatment and inpatient stays usually means you cannot hold a decent job and get to be a welfare case dependent on Medicaid coverage.

The first had a negligent mother who forced him to shower on his own at 4, but the second took baths still with parental supervision. Clinical psychologists are completely fucking useless. They generally do not know how to treat specific conditions, they just milk people who need someone to talk to about standard life problems. I have always wondered if the ones that only take private pay make more than the ones who take insurance. I would imagine so.

I know two people with psych degrees and neither are doing a job at all related to psych.
