Carpet's not that bad as long as you take care of it and don't put it where it doesn't belong (my girlfriend's parents had carpet in the bathroom of their old house for some abhorrent reason). Just needs a once a week vacuuming and occasional shampooing or spot cleaning. Stops being any good at all when you're renting, though. That's a big no-go for me after my last place, where the cleaners baked the scent of cat piss into all the carpets via steam cleaning when they cleaned prior to us moving in rather than replacing the carpet like they should have.
