Monster Hunter Community Thread - A thread for discussing the Monster Hunter games and its community.

Maybe it's what you're looking for, but Rise is the biggest deviation in gameplay the series has to offer. It's a borderline spinoff. I sank a couple hundred hours into it, but it's ultimately the weakest in the series for me. After a certain point, master rank is excruciating. It suffers from an overbearing upgrade system that I swear is just padding, so be warned. Hopefully the game doesn't make you autistic about your perks and abilities lmao
I STILL play World, I played Rise for the entirety of the main game but never bothered to get the ad ons. The dragons looked cool and everything but idk, I like my ps5.
I'm SO excited for wilds, I wonder if it's taking place in the old or new world?

The first one I tried and got into heavily was 4U via emulation and I've been doing 1 or 2 of them a year since. Played through most of the first one up to G rank, basically cleared GU, cleared Rise, cleared most of 4U. About to actually get my hands on Portable 3rd HD on PPSSPP and dig into that.

A few months ago finally installed World and played through to end game Iceborne/Guiding Lands and I just don't understand the appeal. Sure some of the QOL stuff is fine but like so much of the charm/soul is just gone. A big part of the combat feeling satisfying in pre-World had to do with hit feedback and knowing which parts were weak points with each weapon via blood decals and sound, that's mostly gone in World. Instead World is so hyper fixated on being a big boy console game with le epic graphix for the normalfags that everything is caked in bloom and they've replaced all the hit feedback/sound stuff with the equivalent of knocking down or beating on drywall. Not to mention the mandatory cutscenes, Handler etc, scoutflies are retarded.

Rise I feel did a better job balancing the QOL stuff but wasn't quite where it needed to be, Sunbreak is dope though and really rounded the base game out. It's like any other game series now though where they've struck gold and will now chase the money train via pursuing a more "mainstream audience" while sanding down and getting rid of the rough edges that got them a niche following to begin with.

Worldbabby here, currently playing the old-gen games (4U, GenU, not sure if I should play Tri or 3U now that Loc Lac is restored, etc.) and I really do like how much of a "battle of attrition" the old-gen games feel compared to World/Rise. There's a lot more deliberate thought into what items you can bring and I've had to be more mindful of foraging throughout my playthrough. If you fuck up and don't bring an item in the new-gen MH games or forget to eat in them, you can always just go back to the camp and restock/eat again. If you forget in the old-gen games, you're just fucked.

Also I like Risebreak more than World/Iceborne, especially because of the movement, but I really hate how they just SHOW the monster on the map as soon as the mission starts. Is it really hunting if you already know where the damn monster is and you don't have to search for it anymore? Capcom probably saw people rightfully shitting on the scoutflies as a mechanic and decided to completely overcorrect and make it so you can just see them off the bat.

I've always wanted to try out Monster Hunter, and searching online never really helped me in figuring out what the game(s) were about; so I picked up World a few days ago. So far it feels like I got duped into buying Microsoft Excel - are the other games just as heavily RPG? I was hoping it'd be more of a white noise dinosaur killing game rather than a minmax experience. I'm fine with RPG elements, but having to dump an inordinate amount of hours just to artificially move stat numbers around stopped being fun after a while for me.

The grind is in every game but for World the armor skills in low rank are so unfocused you can get away with running whatever you want until high rank where skills become more focused.

The big problem with MH skills post GU is that the meta aka easiest sets to build for and use to progress are Weakness Exploit/Crit Boost sets, IMO the addition of those skills has been disastrous. Every game since their inclusion has basically had an identical meta to strive for and it's kind of gay.

I have played well over 3000 hours of monster hunter since Tri. Im a greatsword main and hammer secondary, tho i love the bowguns a lot of that requires your partners to not be fucking retards which is almost impossible in this day and age. I have a huge love for the older games as they were more strict about you learning the different attack patterns of each monster (i.e. knowing when it was safe to heal, sharpen, reload etc.) but i dont personally have a problem with them making it a bit mor accessible for newer player since those games where a bitch and a half to learn and the tutorials sucked balls. also while i found the concept of paintballs to be interesting, it was also just a thing that took up your already limited slots. Overall I dont particularly have a problem with nu-monster hunter but I just hope they dont keep diluting to the point of being a baby movie game.

Weakness exploit existed before gen, it just wasnt as insane beforehand since it was just a 5% damage boost to weak spots instead of 50% affinity. As it is now it definitely feels overtuned and centralizing. Maybe it was more acceptable in GU since skill points were scarce and an endgame set would realistically only have 4-5 skills, but nowadays it really doesn't have an excuse to be as overtuned as it is.

The meta itself is honestly a meme, especially from meta subreddit. Unless you're a speedrunner you really don't need to pack exclusively damage skills, and the setbuilders themselves don't really believe damage trumps all because otherwise every meta set would be running heroics. People should just run what's more comfortable for them and focus damage when they're more confident in their play.

Right but the sets for WEX are so easy to build for that it's one of those skills that you should just try to get outright. In general I'm not a fan of the way armor skills were reworked post GU with going from 1-3 skills usually in a set to upwards of sometimes 10 if you get good talismans in melds or deco gacha or whatever.

Guessing you picked it up on steam during the capcom sale, LR is fairly easy to just punch through the only thing you'd need to pay attention to apart from fashion hunting is to ensure your using the correct element to make the hunt easier. Once you hit HR skills get a bit more interesting, if you really don't want to grind do yourself a favour and install mods including Zenny/item mods you don't want to have to hunt Kirin 40 times for a jewel to drop to build one piece of armour.

Also HR is when you unlock the layered option so you can mix and match your pieces but have a cohesive look over the top, and pat Poogie ! Fuck making me want to play world again, or should i just suck it up and buy Sunbreak?

Allegedly MH Wilds will be the most open world compared to any previous game in the series. No more centralized hub world/village - instead you travel around a larger open world and visit camps within the various local regions in order to interact with NPCs (who function similar to what a traditional hub/village would offer.) The regions and maps will supposedly be seamless; and once visited, these camps will act as fast travel points. (2-3 times larger than World overall.) Storywise, this will likely be a follow up to World.

This guy (Maximillian Dood) saw a longer 30 minute preview at Summer Games Fest and talks about it here:

Deviation? Rise is more like classical MH than World is, despite World being mainline and Rise a spin-off, literally.

I just hope Wilds won't be as huge, complex and cinematic as World. It got tiring getting into all those systems when Rise was just two different linear quest paths and a village hub.

I've tried several times to get into Stories but wasn't til Stories 1 dropping recently that I managed. Actually quite fun. Still got some bullshit jrpg gatekeeping bosses but the pokemon farming is fun at least. Seeing that "Notoriously hard World boss" (who's a pushover in other games) return as a pet

One of Karl's videos popped into my feed that I thought was pretty interesting.
Honestly surprised since Deva was high profile runner. As if PC speedruns weren't already a joke with modded equipment, this guy and the chink have successfully poisoned the well for all runners from here on with AI adjustments. People shitting on him in his video comments is pretty funny though.

Bit of a necro, but I want to ask; is Rise worth getting on PS5? It's on sale right now for the next few days, so I was thinking about getting it, supposed to be easy but still fun, from what I'm hearing? Anyone have any opinions?

It's fun, I'd still recommend PC over console any day but if its your only option then its still good. The monster fights in Rise are leaps and bounds better than World and there's more variety as well. The tutorials are still pretty shit as per tradition though so you'll probably want to find a general weapon guide somewhere if it's your first game unless you really enjoy reading through textboxes.

Fairly fun and fairly easy. Has a couple of missed opportunities in it that while don't really detract from the game will leave you wishing something was done with them.

I'd say it's worth pirating.

Not my favourite game compared the other mainline titles and the doggo movement is void once you unlock fast travel camps, but if it comes with sunbreak at a decent discount i'd say yeah it's worth it at least for a single play through.

Worlds is still my favourite current MH title.

It takes the things World did like more verticality, more open maps and does it better for the most part. You'll see some people kvetch about wirebugs which I agree with to some extent, mainly early-mid game over how they trivialize a lot of monster combos. That being said, wirebugs are incredibly fun to use regardless and the movement options they add on top of the moves are very fun. The feedback while hitting monsters is still fucked from World, if you don't have damage numbers on it's incredibly hard to tell if you're hitting weak spots or not and the VFX for crits are extremely obnoxious, much less so since Sunbreak added the option to tune it down but before it was a nightmare. Palamutes are cool addition and can get pretty busted if you kit them out right. Rampages are an odd addition but very easy to do and don't take long if you are literate.

G rank still isn't THAT hard if you've played any other games in the series but it's definitely a step up from the base game, post game fights can get a little dicey too, especially the monsters they added in the post launch updates like Risen Elders and other variants. As for value, my first save file had a couple hundred hours on it by the time I had finished every quest in both village and hub so if it's on sale and you end up enjoying it you'll be getting pretty good bang for your buck.

There are a few features done better in Ricebreak than in Worldborne: such as you can always skip cutscenes, the training area is more customizable, latent power skill trigger conditions finally dont suck ass. Also, except for the goddamn "compiling shaders..." waiting time at launch, the game shows better performance in PC than world.

In contrast, online hubs are for max 4 people instead of 16 as in mhw, you cannot bind your layered drip with an equipment loadout, and video/sound fx are vastly inferior in comparison IMO.
